i when i was buying my 4.2 Essendon nissan had one it was a 2001 model no offroad in perfect condition only a bull bar and 60k on it they wanted 36k

Have you mod'd the turbo/intercooler and exhaust on a 4.2L?
How do you think it affects the reliability/longevity of that engine. AFter all that is the criticism leveled at the 3L that it works too hard. Obvioulsy squeezing more power out of an engine is going to affect these things.
Any ideas?
Have only changed the exhaust to 3" makes it breath easier and warranty wasnted affected.
Also turbo has been boosted and running more fuel via the injector pump.
I understand where your coming from in regards to modifying the motor and hence reliabilty is down.
Well with a 4.2 they come de-tuned quite heavily and all your doing is making them run at what they should be at.
quite common to see a 4.2 with 12-14psi of boost doing 500k+ easy as long as its been serviced.
With mine including the modifcations which cost a total of $1000 ($500 cheaper than shity safari d-tronic)
Mine puts out more power than a 3L and gets 10% better fuel economy.

Yeah, you're dreaming!!! Especially if you are towing you'd probably START at 20l per 100klms and go up from there.
My take on the 3L motors, apart from what everyone says, is sheer physics. You have a 2.4something tonne truck being pushed along by a 4cyl 3Ltr engine with lots of bells and whistles. Against a 4.2 which dosen't develop as much power stock but has no bells and whistle to go wrong and stop you in your tracks (ie Airflow meter keeps popping up) and the sheer size of the engine is more likely to handle the weight of the vehicle for a longer period of time than a 3ltr 4cyl engine.
I'd prefer to have a big lump of steel, loaping along for ever than a wizzy little buzz motor speed me in to the ground after a couple hundred thousand klms. In my mind, the 4.2 just isn't going to be working as hard to do the same job, and when something is worked hard, that is usually when it fails.
I have had little experience with my 4.2TD and no first hand experience with the 3L but so far am very happy with my choice and hopfully will be for another half million klms.

Then again, disconnect the odo, and drive it... sell it in 5 yrs time with 320,000klms on it.. Drive by GPS..
320,000 isnt that much in terms of a WELL looked after Diesel.

Agree... Most people only look at the figures on a piece of paper.. WOW.. LOOK AT THE KW.. then look at the up to 3.5t that people fill them with shit for touring... as said, lotta weight for a little 4cyl engine. You cant expect anything more than it being under shit loads more stress than a lazy 6..
u know we could always look out for a decent 4.2 or a late series 3 (3L)
so many people on this forum people come across stuff all the time i dont mind looking out for stuff if you want just let us know your budget it may even be worth u traveling interstate for the right model at the right price.
either way i dont mind helping u out or anyone else looking.

its a 3L which is the best has 108k full history

Thanks i have seen that. i dont have 33k at all. I got like 26 MAYBE 28k - and i bought a refrig van this week so i gotta get rid of something before i buy a another 4x4 - so now i got spacia and a pajero for sale.
If i cant get a good patrol for that money i will start looking for something else, maybe a rangie ?
then stop lookin for good GU's, you just wont get a GOOD one for them bucks. You may get a GU, but it aint going to be low klms and top condition for them bucks. Sorry to break ya dream bubble.. :(

Well i am in no way going to buy a 200k+ car for that much cash - i will wait and keep my eye out with people like Eric (who said it could be possible) and watch the papers, and will start having a look at a few alternatives, i guess, like a Rangie - but then again NOT that keen on petrol.. :( fug
I also owned the 3.0 (which had problems) and now the 4.2. I wont buy another 3.0. Also think about servicing costs. It costs me less to service the 4.2. Less prone to bad fuel and easy roadside repairs than the computerised 3.0.
Why do Nissan only offer the ute with a 4.2. Is it cause its a better stronger motor and can handle better situations. Why is the 4.2 $6,000 - $8,000 more than the 3.0. And don't say cause they want to sell more 3.0.
With exhaust and dyno work Morkz 4.2 drives very strong and something i'll be doing next month. And I'm sure it'll last a long time cause they say its all down to a good service record that keeps them going.

Perhaps you should go for a late model GQ with the 4.2 turbo.
You'll get it alot cheaper, has the same motor and running gear so it'll go forever, and you'll have cash left over for some extras........mods, servicing etc.......................

For the money you have to spend there is bound to be a GQ out there.
Mate has just bought a late GQ Turbo Diesel, Lifted, Winch, Big Rubber etc etc for 18K.
Took it down to the local Diesel shop and had a few things tweeked and checked and is extremely happy and still has a bucket load of Dollars left over. He gave up looking for a GU as he couldn't afford the asking prices. Bought the car and doesn't have to spend a thing on options and Mods.
Most importantly....He even got cup holders.

The thing I'm most dissapointed with my TD-6, is how thin the pannels are. I've had it for about 18 months now and have numerous dints in the body. These aren't from the hard tracks I've done but from sticks flicking up, people closing the door by pushing on the side and from leaning over the engine bay.........
So picking up a GQ in good nick has some extra benifits in the strength of the body if your intending to use it for what it was built for.
