Damn you , I was all ready to spend on the Brawn. Now a re-think is in order. Also came across the MOSFET control box for the Warn, I guess maintaining sloenoids is a thing of the past with this installed?

It's my understanding that Warn winches are not waterproof and will void the warranty if they are submerged unless you fork out the extra $$$$ on a waterproofing kit. I have a 9,500lb Brawn winch, it's fully waterproof and pulls the Cruiser no problem.

The Warn XP has similar waterproofing to a Brawn. The XP pulls like a train, and is rated for continous use, so you can use it until the batteries go flat. It does not heat up when used and also has 125 feet of cable compared to the Brawns 100 feet. Just bought a new winch, went and spoke to Colin at Brawn and found a few of the claims just smoke and mirrors. For example, it has been indicated that they completely rewire the electrics. From what I could gather from Colin, he just cleans up the earth contacts and adds heavier cable to power the motor. Also the dealers are often cheaper than dealing with Brawn itself. Could buy their winch $100 cheaper at one of his dealers than what he would sell it direct for. For the record, I paid the extra and got the Warn 9.5XP. I just don't trust the chinese winches.

Firstly thank you for acknowledging the Waterproofing of our winch, however what glasses were you wearing when you saw the smoke and mirrors, was it that you were so preoccupied at being "Burnt" (literally) with the Magnum that you were'nt really listening. I'll run through it again for the sake of the forum. Inhouse we wire ALL control wiring, and yes the eathing is also improved. We do Not upgrade the Heavy cables here, we specify it from the factory. You seem to have picked up on the simple bit about no paint over the earth terminal. Does the XP have paint on the earth terminal?
"Rated for continuous use" thats infinatly more than the 30 second magnum you had. I'll supply the batteries and lets see Warn's definition of "Constant" When it cools down we'll take ten paces back each, connect our hooks and see which one pulls the other to bits. (You can pick any winch off the shelf for me to use). What bull bar are you running on the Rangie, as we have bent some. Also we better replace your cable before we start the Tug O War because I know the Warn will break and I don't want it in my wind screen.
As far as the $100 cheaper, you would of had to ship it from Brisbane, You fail to mention that the other 2 dealers you spoke with would not give you any joy on pricing. Did you buy the XP direct from Warn or a dealer and why?
You use a word like TRUST, I only know you as P76 because during the 3 anonamous phone calls and 1 visit you failed to identify yourself as having called prior why was this? To catch us out, sorry to disapoint rattled off the same story 4 times.
Please tell me what you paid for the XP, you could of had ours for $1350

If you are refering to Robin with the GU bumper mounted Winch, Against my advice Robin opted for the XR-8000 then the HR-9000 for reasons of keeping weight as low as possible. Last I heard from Robin was a lovely story of how the ZR-9500 pulled him and his family out of the goo late on a Sunday. I think he is a very happy customer.

Coool down, My intentions are to make clear the differences in provided specs for everyone. Not creating a fight. Never seen a Brawn winch in real life (are a bit rare on this part of the continent ) so can only give an opinion based upon the specs.
Choose your own best winch, and don't let it take the level of namecalling.....

an 8000? You are joking arent you? Didnt know that one.. I know he is a tosser from way back with his "LIGHTWEIGHT GU" ( this bloke people, actually removes the plastic from drills to keep the weight down...) but never mentioned he was trying to pull a GU with an XR8..

Bj42oz. I can see why mudtoy and you get along so well. Thanks for acknowledging that you do not completely rewire you winches. The only thing that you mention in your reply is that you play around with the wiring on the solenoid pack.
In regard to your waterproofing. You acknowledged when I meant you that you had not pulled down winches that had been drown to determine whether water actually got into the components or not. So I think the claim should be that your winches are more water resistant than others, not necessarily water proof. You did not appear to comment on the Warn XP having similar treatment to your Chinese winches.
The Warn XP does not heat up, so I am not clear about what point you are trying to make when you state that after it cools down. I winch virtually continously for around 20 minutes under reasonable load and the XP wasn't even warm.
I acknowledge that the Magnum had a low usage cycle. It is a fair bit better than 30 seconds. And yes I cooked the motor through operating it past its limits. However, ARB were excellent in the way they looked after me and I purchased the XP through them. I got an extremely good deal through ARB on the XP. I have dealt with ARB over many years and they continue to surprise me with their customer service. (I do not work for ARB or have any association to them outside being a customer)
