Hilux engine noise at high rev.. help
Hey i need a diagnosis on the lux. Ok this is the story at 2700rpm - 2900rpm I get a loud rattle sound. It does it in neutral with the clutch in so it's not gearbox also in 2wd and 4wd. My guess is its piston slap.. not good. What do you guys all think?? Is it fixable?? the noise goes away at higher revs. Its an 89 single cab turbo 2.8 engine with 250kms if this helps. Look forward to your help.

i thought it may have been the thrust bearing
you need to get around the motor & have a listen when its doing it to find out where its coming from you can use a screw driver up to your ear (the handle end) or invest in a Stethoscope

it only ever does it at around 2700-2900rpms and makes no difference if the clutch is in or out?? Im pretty sure it might be engine trouble. It still drives fine but if it is engine rattle what will eventually happen and should I fix it or just wait until it actually causes problems. I don't want to have to get an entire new engine because I didn't fix something that could of only cost $200 bucks or so. The problem is i've asked a few different mechanics and they all tell me different diagnostics.
Hi
Just a suggestion, I have seen this on a couple of other makes of vehicles.
If there is a tin plate bolted onto the exhaust manifold ( a sort of heat shield ) sometimes they get cracks around the bolts holding them on. They can also create some silly noises in a motor at revs.
I dont say it is the problem but its worth checking out.
Cheers

Just on the offchance - is this rig fitted with a snorkel ?? If so check the usual sources of 2.8L snorkel noise, including the non-collapse spring ( if fitted )
