how obvious are extended shackles

Post by rockcrawler31 »

if i stick extended shackles on my cruiser, how obvious are they to the fuzz and DOT when driving down the road? (bastard queensland DOT laws!) also what advantages/disadvantages do they give as far as lift/flex/on road manners?

if i fit these, could i still run longer, more arched springs without losing the lift that they give?

generally you get 1/2 inch lift for every 1 inch longer the shackle is, but once you start going big (i/e. extending the shackle more than 2 inches) you get diff pinion angle issues as it rotates the rear of the diff downwards. smaller lifts wouldn't be too noticable i don't think, but bigger ones are quite obvious

I've got 2inch longer shackels on my sierra, and by the time you paint them black and get some mud on them, they don't stand out enough to worry!! and after quizzing a copper mate on issues like this and other 4wd mods, he said that a) most cops wouldn't know what an extended shackle is, or what your tyre sizes should be, or most issues 4wdrivers worry about getting caught over. and b) unless your rig looks like a rundown heap, or feral rock crawler that obviously shouldn't be on the roads, and you aren't doing anything illegal. The cops usually don't waste their time on minor issues that invlove extra paperwork..

However D.O.T inspection are a different story...

If your really worried about being done for it just put it off till next year when we get the new car modification rules come in. Then they carnt do a thing about it. I have 2" extended shackles and 31" muds with an uninspected 2" body lift on my sierra and have been pulled over numerous times and the only thing anyone ever said anything about was that my tyres used to stick out from my guard. A bit of garden edging later and the are yet to bother me again and have been pulled over about 10 times since.
