Let's talk about engines
Moderator: -Scott-
There are better options than a Starion 2.6 turbo for us.
- Astron 2 2.6 with aftermarket turbo and Magna multi point EFI set up factory ECU is only good for about 6psi boost so aftermarket would be the go
- Sirius Dash 4G63 2.0ltr motor very similar to Oz Starion donk but with a bigger turbo, intercooler, 3 valve head and extra larger injector (3 injectors) - 200Hp standard
- 4G63 2.0ltr 16 valve DOHC turbo as found in the Galant VR4
- 4G63 2.0ltr 8 valve SOHC turbo as found in Oz Starions - 165Hp standard
- imported factory Starion 2.6 turbo's with port injection are available from engine importers
These will all bolt up to a KM132 box which is what is under a 2.6 Paj except with the addition of a t/case it is designated a KM145.
My personal choice would be a rebuilt Astron 2 2.6 with the Magna EFI set up and aftermarket turbo (intercooled) running around 10-14Psi, in a swb that would get up and boogie

Your personal choice is very much what Lizzord30 and srpoly are running. I think there is someone else on MPI as well, but I can't remember who. And of course if fasteddy ever gets with the program again...
Based on all that you laid out in your last post, I can't help now but ask, "What's up with you guys?" Get to it men... Time to spool it up!!!
I'm telling you, it's like a drug. Once you try it, you can't get enough.

Yeah there have been some of the EFI conversions done here but the Gen 1 is pretty old now and most have updated.
The 3.5 V6 has plenty of power anyway but the 3.0 V6 is not so owners are always looking for ways to increase power mainly by way of supercharging or engine conversions.
Remember for serious wheelin with big tyres and fully locked with bulk power = offroad breakages !!!!
I'm concentrating on getting the drivetrain right first so a power upgrade later on won't be too dramatic.
Thats why I just can't believe Kary hasn't busted a rear axle with his conversion and a 5sp I suggested he wasn't driving really hard stuff and he got offended. Have a look at the rear axle breakages on this forum there is a Gen 2 swb that has broken 2 in 12 months with a 2.5TDI !!!!!!!

One of the more interesting conversions (and one i hope to undertake shortly), is a 4g93 out of a evo. Whilst I understand this is on the upper side of the $$$$, I think the end benifit will be more than worth while i my swb. Seeing as it is going to be used mainly to tow the race car, it should be a good conversion with the benifits of efi etc. Will keep you posted if I decide to go this route, otherwise there is this 2.9l stroker turbo engine sitting in a shed at Toowoomba doing nothing...........

All good stuff... Yeah, I remember that "other thread." Myself, I am still very new to wheeling so it's hard for me to qualify it all. I know you guys do drive your rigs, or so the threads would say. There are some people here who drive hard as well, though it does seem like there are only a few who are seriously considering things like SAS.
Lee_Raider is turning big tires on stock Gen I, and I think he wheels hard with stock 2.6, but SAS up front. Lloyd too, with Gen I 3.0.
The way I look at it, the weak link in my chain is me, not my axles. For you, I'm sure it's the opposite.
Ride On,
Bill

re
After putting a 4G93 in, you'll regret not putting in the 4G63 I can assure ya.
I agree 100%. I just did a conversion into my girlfriends proton and wish I had off spent the extra few $$ to go the 4g63. Those extra ccs and ability to handle higher boost... 4g93s need rod and piston upgrades to handle more than 14psi.

Bitsamissin, and others, Do you know if the 2.4l MPI triton (or possibly 2wd express) motors will bolt straight onto the gen1 paj box? I'm interested in this option, as a mate of mine fitted MPI from a Magna to his 2.6, and it was a Bl**dy Nightmare. Lots of cut and shutting, chasing bits, etc etc. And in the end, the benefits really are not that good, certainly not good enough to warrant the nightmare of doing it all.
Admittedly, had he have bought a donor vehicle or a half cut the costs would have been significantly less than chasing bits!

1985lwb, about your Qestion on the Mazda engine. Ill quote from "The Dog & Lemon Guide" 2004 edition.
The early diesel motors which were copied off an old British design, were solid, reliable and gutless. Mazda then designed a newer, more powerfull motor, R2orRF . These were essentially a petrol motor adapted to run on diesel, which, engineering wise, is a very naughty thing to do. As a result, these motors give no end of costly troubles. AVOID THESE ENGINES LIKE THE PLAGUE. end quote.
I have heard that the Mazda 2.6 petrol engine is a copy of the mitsu' motor. If so maybe the 12valve head would bolt to the Mitsu', or the Mazda motor on to the Mitsu' box.
Would think worth a look.[/quote]

Yes they do. I have changed my 2.6 carb engine with a 16V 2.4i from a Triton. I have kept the same transmission box.
