the ute is about to get a new set of boots and i have been getting varied responses from trye joints.
I need decent traction for work, decent wear for value, and would prefer to not be heard from miles away.
All are around $250 a corner

Well my MTR's have much better traction on loose surfaces than most tyres, especially the ones listed above.

For noise I would expect the S/Ts to be quietest, but I believe their loose surface grip is similar to the MT/Rs.
My next tyres will be STTs - probably the old ones, as I think the new look too much like my MT/Rs and I'm afraid the loose surface grip will be similar.
What size are you looking for? My 285 MT/Rs are narrower across the shoulders than 31x10.5 S/Ts.

Just need a bit more info on the application, for a decision to be made between the agressive AT or full mud. The ST is going to be a lot quieter on the road but may not suit the traction that you require. Mileage is going to be good on the Cooper and BFG. Both American made (as long as you don't get the Sth African made BFG, check that) and strong tyres.
My pick is still Cooper.... just the pattern to suit your needs is required.

How does that work?
Sorry, couldn't find a pic so I'll try to describe it.
The width of a tyre is measured from sidewall to sidewall, at the widest point, when the tyre is fitted to the recommended rim width. The shoulder (my definition) is the edge of the tread surface which is nominally flat on the road, or where the tread meets the sidewall. Because of the bulge in the side walls the width of the tread face, from shoulder to shoulder, is less than the nominal width between the side walls.
I have a set of 31x10.5 S/Ts in the shed, and 285/75-16 MT/Rs on the Paj. The S/Ts (nominally 265mm wide) are about 220mm (from memory) from shoulder to shoulder. The MT/Rs are about 10mm narrower - they taper in from the widest point much more than the S/Ts.
33x12.5 MT/Rs seem to be much less tapered than the 285s, and the outer tread blocks seem longer, making the tread surface wider. This may help their loose surface grip, and may explain why some people think they're great, and others (like me) are a little disappointed. I guess it's a manufacturing thing - one tread width does multiple carcase widths, and the 285/75 lost the draw?

People have stated in the past that the MT/R's dont grip the Mud as good as a BFG muddy and I went for a run in a LUX with em and didn't like the gravel stability either. I'm sticking with my muddies even if the newer design is not as good as the OLD ones, for touring they were SUPURB.....

Ive had both MTR and BF Mud in same size 33x12.5 on my GQ one straight after the other....
Im going another set of MTRs. Ive had no issues in mud with mine, or gravel roads, around the club property we do heaps of klms when up there, all gravel until you get to the fun chit..
yeh thos who aren't happy with mtrs on gravel are prolly running 35-40 psi still

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had a look at some 33x12.5 MT/Rs earlier this week, and the pattern is different to the 285/75 I've got. The blocks on the outer edge look longer (i.e. wider across the tread face) which may increase their effectiveness as "paddles" in loose stuff.
So - I just measured mine, and the longest outside block is about 70mm long. Anybody with other sizes care to measure theirs?
Hoonz - I run mine at 20psi in loose stuff, and don't get the same traction as a 100 series at 25psi on BFG muds. How low should I have to go?

i run my fronts at 15 and my rears at 13 or 10 (on 15x8 rims)pending on the track and they work awesome ..
also .. what i did when i got them was fitted them to the car and let them down to 5psi and drove on them for 30mins ... up and down the road

I've got a set of 285x75 MTR's on my Nissan GQ. They arn't wearing too bad but............. unless you use them in a situation where the extra tracion is required frequently, i don't believe they are worth the extra $200/set.
Mine do work well off road and we run them on the 20 or so mine vehicles at work but i will be putting the Brigestone MT on for my next set.

GO the MTR's tough as we run em on our paddock vehicles haven't done a side wall yet, the mines here in CQ use narrow ones (don't know exact size) saw a set on a wrangler the other day done 30K still had at least 3/4 tread remaining
