what should a shock compress like off the car need to know if i brought dead ones or not

or what is the best way to test

When you move the shaft in and out it should have heaps of resistence, especially if its for your patrol. Excactly how much is hard to say. Not all shocks are equal.

it does take a couple of goes but they do get harder after the first compression

grab it firmly by the top stand it up on a hard surface, & compress all the way in, THEN let go if it moves ITS ALIVVE ,or its not a gas shock?

Shocks require "Bleeding" after they have been lying down.
Before instaling shocks you should stand them upright and move them though their full travel at least twice, then instal them without laying them over.

Try dropping a twig on it from above.

It works for crows.

Aside from that, try pulling it out and pushing it in and check for oil leaks where the shaft enters the housing.

You won't really know if it's much good by hand, best is to fit to the car and try it out. Only a couple of bolts anyway.....
