Hilux Turbo compatiblity
Got a 2L-T turbo setup currently running on an L motor. A mate wants one for his 3L. Will it fit?. If my mate doesn't take it it will be for sale soon if anyone wants one.
My whole setup was 1500, drive in, drive away, mechanic supplied everything and gave me 12 month warranty, which was good cause blew seals in turbo after 3 months, I'd say his labour on that was about 700, had it for the day, and fitted a new timing belt, sorry if that don't help with what to sell it to your mate for.

NO! it won't fit. the L, 2L, and early 2L-T have a different head/port setup to the later 2L-TII, 3L, 5L. you could use the turbo but it will be undersize for the engine. you will need to manufacture or purchase an exhaust manifold, which is the second most expensive bit of a turbol setup after the turbo itself.

you can NOT interchange across those 2 groups.
the easiest way to tell which engine you have is to look at the rocker cover - the first group (L, 2L, 2L-T) have a cast aluminium rocker cover. the second group (2L-TE, 2L-TII, 3L, 5L) have a pressed steel rocker cover painted gloss black.
the heads are completely different between the two groups and no parts are interchangable.
the two examples that are quoted in this thread are:
1. 2L-T (early) turbo setup on an L motor - all bolts together.
2. two of: 2L-TE (late) turbo setup on a 3L motor - all bolts together.
the question asked was: will the 2L-T turbo setup currently on the L motor work on a 3L motor - the answer is no, unless an exhaust manifold is sourced or fabricated, and some time and $ invested in plumbing.

$$ depends on which way you want to go - get on to NICK, he might have a suitable manifold for sale second hand, I would imagine somewhere in the $200 - $400 range. You could get on to APS, AXT, Denco etc and see if they would see you just the manifold new - probably $500+. in either of those cases you will probably still need an adaptor or modifications to the manifold as the mounting flange for the toyota turbo is likely to be different to the aftermarket ones. A custom manifold can be built DIY for under about $200 if you have welding skillz - easiest way is to get a header flange from an exhaust shop and get steampipe bends from a steel supplier - need to manufacture the turbo flange from a bit of 10 - 12mm plate. Getting one custom made can cost anywhere from $300 to $1000++ depending on how beautiful you want it.
as for the turbo sizing - assuming the turbo is the correct size for the 2.4 litre motor, a little maths says it will be .4/2.4 = 16.6% too small for the 2.8. but in reality the early CT20 turbo on the 2.4 is already undersized to help with low rpm boost, and is at the ends of useful efficiency pumping 10psi into the 2.4 at 2500rpm. a little more maths says that for the same mass air flow rate that only gives you 8.5psi into your 2.8 - it will boost slightly higher but not efficiently - it will also put a lot of heat into the motor. It will drive great off the line, will come on boost very early (probably around 1200rpm) but by 2000rpm will be completely out of breath - the small turbine housing and turbine wheel are a significant exhaust restriction at higher rpm.
I reckon it's not worthwhile to try and transplant it onto a 2.8 - bottom line is it won't bolt up and the turbo is too small - will cost a lot for a fairly disappointing performance increase. For someone with a 2.4 that needs boosting up however it is a much better proposition.

buy a DTS! just got one fitted to 2.8 and goes great guns. Nice way to spend $4000 makes huge difference. Turbo comes on bout 1500 rpm and keeps going up and over 3500 rpm. Only running 10 psi but does wat i want it to do. get it done by a turbo specialist!!
