Hilux Diffs Under F20

Post by Mudzuki »

A mate of mine has a F20 that has come off the road for a nice buildup. Thinking of putting lux diffs under it on the standard springs for the moment, can anyone see any problems with this conversion???

Also, its a 1.6 with 4sp tranny (a bit gutless), What size tyres should we look at with 4.88 diff ratios? Not sure of standard ratios.

Also, any cheap motor transplants come to mind?

Hopefully i will be able to talk him into chassis extension, long leaves, zuk transfer with rockhopper, and 36" tyres.

Cheers

Keep in mind that the f20's diffs are off centre, on the right side. I run 31" grabber at's and there's no noticeable difference in pulling power (4.77 R&P)). The larger tires make driving at high speeds a little more comfortable because of the lower revs of the engine. I will go to 33's but i also consider an engine swap cause these tires seem a little to big for the little 12r..

F20 axles are quite narrow (and the distance between left and right springpack also) so I don't know if that's a problem with local vehicle regulation,

Ron

The idea of adding the sierra transfer was to help with gearing, but also to help with driveshaft alignment.

Anyone know what the standard tranfer case ratios are in the f20s? High and Low range.

A lot of people use the bundera diffs, as the rear has an offset pinion. But if this is to be an offroad only thing (but will still tolerate on road excursion) you could use a hilux diff. As Ron mentioned the rear output of the standard t case is offset to the right, and the diff pinion is offset to match. However the rear diff pinion flange is offset around 80mm to the right of centre (salisbury type housing), and the hilux pinion flange is around 30mm offset to the right (banjo housing), so around 50mm will be offset of the standard rear driveline. This would work in an offroad vehicle, but you may get mystery vibes for a daily driver. However the flanges (transfer and rear diff) will remain parallel, so the vibe won't necessarily be coming from the offset rear diff. Easy fix with new perches from snake or similar - perch width of hilux 1010mm, perch width of F20 870mm (both rear)

Drivers front spring perch will have it's own problems - the diff housing will cause problems as to where to mount the perch.

Yes, thought that the pumpkin would cause problems.

Yes the rig will need to tolerate on road, as it will be driven to the tracks.

How much are a pair of complete bundy diffs worth?

Probably keep with leaf springs as coils and links maybe too hard for a first time home job.
