Ages and ages ago I seem to remeber having a similar problem, but that was because it was negative switched so if the relay was wired like any other it turned the cars high beam off and the spotlights on, but back to normal on the low beam.

Have you tried the lights with the spot light relay disconnected??

Sorry. I wasn't being facetious. Bulbs today can fail even if off and you just happened to drive a rough road. With light problems, I always suspect them first, and check them specifically by useing shorting wires or a tester if available. The next step is to check the lines to see if each gives voltage as you cycle through your switches.

I usually go as far as I can go until it escapes my understanding, at which point I bite the bitter and pay someone to fix it.

A good look at the other ideas might lead you to a solution.

It's most likely the headlight control switch/stalk behind the steering wheel. Very common problem. Does the high beam indicator on the dash come on still, it should.
The low-high beam switch, switches the negative through the steering coloumn, that is why the spotties still work becuase the spottie's relay control wire is usually wired in near the headlamp plug's positive.

You can pull switch and give the contacts a clean with some very fine wet and dry paper but I would change the switch to a new one or atleast a good condition secondhand unit. After a while the switch becomes worse and you will loose low beam too when just driving around.

I've had the same problem twice before in a my 84 LN65 and a 93 KZN130 Hilux.

Had the same problem (Tonka solved it for me too). I sprayed WD40 into the contacts first and the lights worked. It seems that the WD40 and working the switch on and off a few times has got rid of the cr@p at least for now. Has all been good for a few months now.
