G16A and 4 Speed Auto into Sierra

Hi All,

As the subject would suggest, this looks like a possibility for the next update on the little truck... just wondering if anyone has gone about doing this / looked into it and what advice you may have for me.

I believe that the Auto is coming out of a Vitara Estate Wagon, the engine should be out of a Vitara with EFI.

Are you running a b*dy lift???

Clearance is a big issue around the tunnel especially with no b*dy lift.

yeah i am, 2 inches of it infact... but i'm not fussed about cutting up the floor if required... i.e. i don't expect that resale on the car is going to be an issue.

I am unsure if the 4 speed is computer controlled???

It would make for an awesome rock crawler but dunno about on roadd???

i'm told it's electronically controlled? i gather that is the same as computer controlled? is that a good thing? i'd better go home and read my peterson's from a few months back...

onroad is not really an issue, just have to get it to the bush and back, this little car never sees peak hour traffic

If you aren't worried about onroad, I'd go the earlier 3 speed. It's not electronic and is smaller/lighter. Just be aware that revs will be high onroad.......

I agree as well as long as it is a play Zook what transfer are you planning to run I do know of someone that has joined a sierra transfer to a vitara box. Emagine that series three gearing with an auto :lol:

Sam , theres a guy down here !!!
been doing the vit motor , gerabox & modded x-case + sierra x-case
for about 5 years !!!!

ultra low gearing !!!!
has recently fitted 4.8 gears as well !!!!

+ some where along the way , he did an auto sierra as well !!!!

Yeah......................I think the auto was an old three speed trimatic and had no end of problems with it.

From memory, it only lasted about 1 offroad trip before f_cking up !

He's gone back to the Vit 5 speed now !

isn't there that blue colier owned by steve azopolis (whatever) from the nsw zuk club running a 2.0 vitara with a 4 speed auto.

i believe that the steve fellow is running a 2L with an auto but i don't know what the auto is out of...

i'm not worried about on road driving (it just has to get me there and back).

Current set up is rockhopper 3, standard diff setups. i was thinking about doing the twin x-fer's but they just seem to be a no-go with just about everyone that talks about it so the auto seemed like the next option to consider...

I'm definately getting a 1.6L EFI vitara motor, the auto option sounds like something nice to consider since the car will already be in pieces, maybe it would be easy to squeeze it in then.

Hey Uphiir,

Could you fill me in a little more on this 3 speed gear box - i.e. what is it out of?

Smaller? - do you meen shorter in length? Apparently the 4 speed will require shortening of the jackshaft etc so if i could avoid this it could be a good option.

don't mean to be nosey but what do you mean when you said everyone seems against the twin tranfer cases? on the pirate site it seems a lot of them run twin transfer cases , standard sammy ones with low ratio gears etc equivilant to rock hopper 1 and threes. one guy has a triple transfer case set up , why i wouldn't know but they are yanks probobly explains it.
again just interested why people are against this set up

i did a few searches on Pirate and always came back with the idea that twin toyota x-fers are good, but twin suzuki's are bad... i believe this is due to having to twist one of them around (i.e. mount it almost upside-down) which results in rapid oil leaks and the faster death of the bearings in the x-fer case... i don't really like the idea of having to keep rebuilding the case on a regular basis...
