Mu rear diff into rodeo

Brains Trust,

1. Do the Mu's have rear disc brakes on the leaf spring model?

2. If the answer to question 1 is yes, are the centres/ratios the same as the 95ish diesel rodeo?

3. If 1 & 2 are yes, is there anything stopping the installation a rear MU diff under a rodeo??

I was just thinking of an easy was to get rear disc brakes under a rodeo.

2. Yes 4.56:1 have the same center as well

3. hand brake cables will be different with 89-94 2.8td MU's and 94 on 3.1td would be similar as these have a drum inside the disc...

Hmmm.. this sounds interesting. Is the track the same as the Rodeo? Then again sligh changes in track could be made up with different rim offsets.

So lets assume that it goes straight on, does the break system beed change, i.e. the vacumme booster and other bits and pieces? Rear wheel drums are giving me the gripes on my current vehicle!

Not sure about brakes as I have never done this....

I think the track would be the same 1460mm is the wheel track on the MU with 0 offset...

but I also know that the 2.8 MU diff is the same as the 2.8 Jackaroo diff, 88-91 ...

Also consider the 2nd gen Jackaroo diffs. The autos and diesels have the 4.56:1 12 bolt diffs and also a 1460mm track...

Hmm, by second generation do you mean the UBS Jacks. This being the case don't they have 4 link coil spring rather than leaf?

I guess there may be a model with rear spring suspension that may be compatable.

Another question, and I am probably showing my naivity here, but where do I source a MU rear end?

I contact wreckers around the Central Coast and they have trouble differentiating an R7 to an R9 Rodeo!!

If I mentioend a MU they would look at me as if I came from a diffent planet... (Planetisuzu.. hoho)

Doh! you're right. Didnt really think about that one did I. :roll: Unless a leaf spring conversion is reasonably easy... :?

By swapping diff centres/housings etc, would I be able to get a diff centre that would accept a lockright auto locker (or maybe a ARB Air-Locker) & have disc brakes??

I know that for a fact that the air locker fits........ and that is a RD44

This is the same locker for the Rodeo, Jackeroo, MU......... (Isuzu 12 bolt)

I would be interested in seeing if anybody has or will do a MU/Frontera rear diff swap........ my rear diff is leakin like a screen door on a submarine......... rather than pullin it out and spending 600 bux getting it reco'd, might be easier to get my hands on a diff from a jap wrecker in Sydney. Rear disks would be nice :) especially if i put 33's on it

I was considering a coil conversion on my Rodeo. Getting a rear chassis cut of an MU and transferring all the bits. However I decided I wasn't that keen.

I saw a Rodeo today with 33's on it. Looked great.
It looked like it only had a mild suspention lift of only 2 inches but it also had a body lift of 3 - 4 inches.

I wish I was keen enough to do a body lift on mine.

yes....i´m doing the conversion right now... ´cause I have stock 8/10 diffs combination in my ute . My problem is how to enlarge the handbrake cable....my ´91 Mu axle has a shorter cable than the ute ones. :?

what about the MU front end they seem to sit higher than the jacks does anyone no if they are higher and if they are how much work it is to do the swap.

also does anyone no if the front control arms out of a 98 and later model jacka woulds fit in a 94 one. before you all think im crazy the 98 and later control arms are 18 mm longer than the 94 and i could do with the extra height.

Dani the only thing I can think of is cables from a LWB Jackaroo/trooper 91 model which had the same diff as the MU (with the disc brakes), I don't know if the troopers over there would have the same setup though....

or next option is to do a centre mount disc hand brake. This would eliminate the uselessness of the MU handbrake issue (yes they are crap)

yes we have chilean Troopers (US style) and Bighorns (Jap imported) here...ahh...yesterday i saw a white Jackaroo over here, so we have a few Aussies too. I´m going to look for some new brakes or a larger cable.
Yes they are crap...my Mu handbrake never works fine.
