G'Day all,
I've got a BJ42LX 3B shorty thats in need of new springs and shocks. Currently running 32's but want to run 33's and get more flex.
What brands do people suggest? On a bit of a budget too!
Does anyone know about the quality of the Ironman 4x4 kits?

Any help would be great.

im starting to get sick of the crap ride in my 40.. im almost starting to think my rear shocks have gone.. I noticed the additional flex in tojo's post in the "show us ya 40" thread and Id be very interested investigating whats required for the mods he made.. the 2in susp lift isn't too bad but its nothing crazy..

i think i'll need madatory neck braces soon though, some of the roads around here have me bouncing all over the place, almost out of my seat.. I should really re-check those tire pressures soon..

no more has to be said. use your original springs. maybe swap to 60 series at rear for more travel and thats it.

mate a lift will cost you a grand or more for 2 inch.

you will get like 5inches for around the same $$ with SPOA.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not just any 40......

A BJ42LX :armsup:

Last year I put enforcer (carrolls) springs - they are the softer ones not heavy duty. i took a leaf out and they are almost comfortable - come on dude its a 40, they flex well enough (+50mm) with a bit of body lift too i run 34s. All up cost probably $650. on road matters to me it handles fine and is legal yes it is bouncy but my wagon does not weigh much

If i could spend that again i would throw a bit more cash in and set up a 60 rear. longer spring in the back means better wheelbase they flex more and ride better. you need to lengthen tailshaft - this set up is better than std 40 spring and reckon would not cost heeeaps more, just planning.

stick with a 40 spring in the front.

If you're loaded and want to build a monster then ignore what i have just said and do some homework....but if yer like the rest of us i reckon they are decent. trim yer guards a bit and you will run 33s easy.

my suspension cost bugger all. Just a bit of time and effort. I use factory toyota springs too, not aftermarket ones. Not all of them are the standard ones that came on the 40 though!! If your on a budget i would recomend getting your springs reset. Spend the money you save on some good shocks. Others might recomend aftermarket kits, and they are probably good too.

oh yeah bj42lx :armsup: :armsup: :armsup: set mine up to cover all angles a user n tourer used ome springs n shocks but heavy duty due to the wieght it carries but still run 33s get good flex a good ride but i do admit it has a hefty price tag ,re setting springs will generally sag in about six months time u get what u pay for save your money up n get a decent suspension oh and welcome aboard

If you decide to go with Dirty Rock Stars approach a few tips.

The 2 inch lift doesn't do anything for your flex. Accept that off the bat. DON'T let the guy in the spring shop tell you he has put some troopie springs in the back to stop the sag either. That really hurts.

I found that the ride is all in the shockies. I had the traditional shockies in under the beast after the 2 inch lift. It really really hurt to drive it. Then I did the SPOA, now I need to LOWER my 4x4!! pretty easy, just pulling some leaves out of the springs, the rear still doesn't travel though. Back to ride comfort, I really really noticed a big difference when I installed the ranchos. It is all in how they work. Do a bit of research but the ranchos don't just supply a gas pressure outwards like most shockies. They come unclamped in the back and you can compress them all the way down and let them go and they stay as is. A shockie that works by regulating the flow rather than just suppling another spring booster will improve your ride dramatically.

I got the adjustable rachos and won't look back, you pay the bogger $$ but it made my 40 almost enjoyable to drive.

If you are thinking about a SPOA don't do the spring lift, combined they are too much and you are just wasting money later.

Get the shockies and then save up for the SPOA and you can run 35's with ease (I think)

So another question,

My front leaves are just about flat and the rears aren't far off. When i'm off roard, the rear wheels rub on the body. Will putting new shocks, say Rancho's, give me more lift or do i need new leaves as well?

No but think of it this way.....use the springs to gain the flex, and the shockies to control the flex. Shochies wont give lift. If you want a lift and your springs are shagged go for a SOA as shagged springs are perfect for SOA. Are you at all handy with tools/welding/grinding....if so a SOA is fairly easy, or ring mark Cheezy 4x4 and get a price off him and see what the differance is between a SOA and new leaves/shockies eg OME.

the SOA will give you soooooo much more than 2 inch, cost vs return there is very little comparison in my opinion.

hey.
i run 34x11.5r16 on stock springs, sprung under, with a few spring clamps undone. i would like more but as i said it is still standard. and works well for what it is. i don't think for 33's you need to touch it at all, but maybe just get you spring's reset.

i wounld probly not worry about it, just for the 33.

for those with the spring overs could you post up some specs please. I'm curious about the distance between the bumpstops at ride height, compressed and extended for front and rear. Go get out your tape measures!!! Thanks!

Like everyone else said bj42lx spring over thows out stability ,srings control hieght ,shocks control comfort of ride altho if u get heavy duty springs and carry no wieght no matter what shock u fit u will have a ruff ride ,take into consideration the later use of the truck eg toy or tourer
