Damn the more I look at this rig the more I want one. I hope I don’t buy one until I get a daily driver…..Oh crap I don’t think I can fight the urge.
I like the look of the swampers but I have already got a set of 29 bfg mudders which will have to do.
Just a few q’s for those in the know. Any lj at this stage coz I will need to find one.
Will a 1lt fit, what motors do they all have?
I have some OME med sierra rears will they fit or are they way to long? I don’t care if I have to extend a little bit?
Hmmm I also have some wide track diffs lying around, are they much wider and will it be worth changing?
And before every one say search…..I know exactly where to find these answers but I would prefer a bit more LJ tech on these pages.

short answer yes the 1L will fit with mods of course, its easier to fit into the LJ80 as that already has a 800cc version, the LJ50 has the two stroke engine which needs bit more engine bay modification.
With the OME's i'd say rears might be a bit too long but if you extended it a bit they prolly be alright, LJ50's had same length springs front and rear, which i think are the same length as sierra fronts dont quote me tho.
The widetracks not sure how much wider they are but the front pumpkin is offset whereas LJ is centred dunno if this makes a difference or not and of course the diff ratio's considering the LJ50's 4.8's and LJ80 4.56's
But yeah its possible
I started doing one up when I was in Moora but I left it there when I came back to Perth.
I painted the whole thing, cut out all the rust, body lifted it and put a roll cage in.
Heres a pic after the body was done. I never got any of it finished and put back to gether.
It had a 4k engine in it aswell.

bent the front diff in Tassie !! (back on cup wk-end !!)
it got engineered on the thursday B4 cup wk-end , registered friday morning , on the boat over , friday arvo !!

So what is the final drive on the LJ’s?
What I am thinking is that the original diffs might be a bit small for 31’s. If I put the WT diffs in then I would have sorted the strength issue out. To fix the offset pumpkin I could use a sierra case with rock hoppers. I would have to do a Body lift for the tyres anyway so the Tcase will fit also.
I am thinking one litre old gold coz I could get one cheap. Cheap is good when you are broke (me). If I could afford I would go g13bb.
My rig will be for mainly playing on the beach and stuff. So a nice all terrain tyre like the tsl of ltb

Dad and I used to trial a new one in the 70's.
You put in outboard pistons to take them up to approx 650 cc
They were very hard on front brake drum/hub splines as the drive spline also carried the brakes and wheel and wore badly.
We ran 700x16 x ply Reidrubber mud tyres.
Had to take the tailgate off so it wouldn't float in the water hazards and lose traction.
Traded "up" to a LJ80. They both seemed to be painted straight onto bare metal, hence the rust.

Get a LJ50 and start their. Fit the sierra diffs and transfer case so that they line up. LJ axles are very weak and snap easily. The 50 is better because the front springs are ony 600mm apart compared to the LJ80 which are 700mm apart. Fitted with a widetrack diff you will get some awesome flex out of it. Standard LJ50 track is 1100mm. LJ80 is 1200mm
The main problems you will run into are
NO under bonnet room. You don't want to have to get an ugly looking LJ80 bonnet so just put a 2 inch body lift in. Only need nine blocks.
Stick with the small motors as the car only weighs 700 kgs from the factory. A F-10A will be fine. Try and get a five speed gearbox from a JA11 jimny from japan to get the 4.063 first gear. slips in nicely down the very narrow tunnel. Big gearboxs won't fit.
Also steering gets in the way for most larger engine mods. Master cylinder upgrades are difficult without major mods. No easy bolt in here.
Also remember LJ's are 100mm shorter than Sierra so on steep hills can flip (front or rear)
No lockers available for standard LJ diffs unless you want to buy a lock rite ( lj80 stockman) or get an Quaife auto locking torque bias differential. This works on the principle that when one wheel slips it sends all the power to the other side. ( like tractrion control in a diff centre) Will cost you around $1300 US for the centre. will only fit late model LJ80 too.
Main advantages to LJ's are
Can be legally A-framed without having any control of brakes. Car left the factory under 750kgs so no brake control is needed.
Car is over Thirty years old and can be put on club rego/ discounted registration. Check your state for detials. Only costs $160 per year to register. Conditions apply.
Any more question just post away and I will try and answer them for you. I love Lj's ( have 4 1/2 at the momement) so post away.

My intention for this rig would be moderate club trips and beach camping. I have been throwing a few ideas around in my head and a few key issues I need to address. Fist of all I want to keep it as Suzuki as possible.
I’m starting to wonder how well the cap motor will go in there. (not sure on engine ID) My first thought would be with the turbo but this may prove very expensive considering the accessories that go with the turbo. But the advantages of this motor would be that it is small, light and fuel injected. Which brings me to my next thought which is running straight gas. I would need to put a few small tanks in the tray then box over it. The advantages of this would be that I could plug the injectors and run gas through the throttle body, which means no computer! Disadvantages would be that it would loss power because of the gas.
As for diffs I would run the WT basically coz they are stronger wider and I already have a set. My only issue here is whether I will be able to fit the tyres under the guards. At the moment I have a few sets of rims. First is a set of 5.5â€
