Hi all, I have a problem with a scraping/grinding sound coming from the front of the car - Sounds like somewhere around front axle, comes in when accelerating or decelerating - sounds like moving parts with no grease/oil??
Got me stumped Any ideas?
Gq swb, 4" spring lift, auto, 33x12,5 if that helps any?

while driving home 2nite @ around 90k's took foot off accelerator & scraping/grinding sound was horrendous Placed small amount of accelerator back on & was gone!!! Hmmmmm
ill bet u anything that grinding noise aint coming from the front and is a tail shaft/uni problem...particularly the out put end from the transfer case..classic lifted shorty auto noise. how do i know? i have 5 inch suspension in mine. same gringing noise on backing of as u mention. goes when ur back on the gas. just make sure ur shaft and uni's are well greased with a top quality grease. do u get shaft vibes at all or is that all sorted. lifted auto shortys have it even worse than the manuals..box is longer meaning shaft is shorter again.
mate i have this problem with my shorty and it has only a 2 inch lift and it is not my uni i have tried a diff drive shaft and it is comming from the front and thats the only thing im sure of
it feels like the grinding noise is coming from around ur feet area dont it.. like from just under ur foot well..there is slop or play somewhere in the driveline that allows vibrations..some say spline wearing out in the driveshafts..be sure it is a driveline problem though..rather than a front end issue..

Your right on the MONEY there Mate - Talked to a guy who came through wotk in a lifted shorty 2day.. As soon as I described problem he new it was the tail-shaft..
Give it a good grease up 2moro, see if that helps??

Also check the flimsy plate on the transmission mounted handbrake, it often bends and catches. Getting the direction of the noise while driving can be real difficult.

How did you go with this problem? I have the same prob (gq swb auto) & it grinds after I did the suspension lift..
I have added gearbox packers (spacers) between the chassis & crossmember which has reduced the grind a bit, now I will need to speak to cheezy about getting some longer trailing arms done as apparantly they fix the prob also..

I have exactly the same problem and also a 5inch lift but mine is a LWB though. I'll get under and have a look one of these days....
with big lifts in the wagons, i have also heard of the rear shaft hitting on the crossmember, if the shaft hasnt been rotated so the fat end is at the pinion end,
i have heard through a couple of sources that the grinding/scraping noises are from the actual tail shaft spline becoming a bit sloppy or out of alignment due to the extra stresses caused by the extra angle the shaft runs. maybe even a wear problem. when i lifted mine i at first didnt have the noise, but its gradual got worse. its still not at the annoying stage, but may get there.
i thought my tailshaft was grinding the cross member at first too but there was no marks on shaft or x member.
what do u guys think about that possible diagnosis? not much u can do but get a new tailshaft i guess if its the case, although regular use of a heavy duty grease in the shaft would help things i guess.
