GU gear box 5th to 4th

Post by GLAD33 »

build 6/99 TD42T ST 150000KM's
@78000KM's Nissan repaired 5th gear(1st owner towing 28' Shark cat)

Having to put what I believe is excess pressure on gear lever to engage 4th gear from 5th after gearbox is hot (running temp)
dealer who I purchased vehicle from has done major service including change of gearbox oil problem still exists

a mechanic I spoke too said that there was a mod done to the top plate/cover of gearbox with ref to the rails I think that's how he explained it some sort of hydraulic lock

most gear changes are OK but accosionally 5th to 4th locks up

Any ideas????

was shown this at the local Nissan dealership

approx wording:

NISSAN TECHNICAL BULLITEN "MT99-001" 1999
Some customers are complaining about trouble changing from 5th to 4th
this phenomenon is caused by out of tolerence of the M/T shift cover
there is a replacement part called M/T shift cover assembly

dont have the part no. I'm hoping that something good will happen about my problem but wont keep my hopes up

worse thing is that previous owner had the 5th gear upgrade done and synchros in 2000/2001 and was complaining about the same problem but of couse Nissan didnt replace the top plate despite knowing of the problem

Well the 5th gear mod is pretty common mine was done at 116k not towing anything. 2000 GU 3.0TDi with a Dtronic. So just having that mod done wouldn't be linked considering they were a shaft spline mod and the one you have now seems to be talking about clearance for gear selection.

Oh yeah I had to have my 3rd gear synchro changed after the 5th repair because of damage casued by reassembly of the output shaft.

I haven't heard of the M/T shift cover prob though, do you have a cost on parts, the gregory's service manuals have been out for the GU for awhile now so doing it yourself should'nt be a hassle.
