GQ diffs under a 78 Rangey?

Post by Snarba »

I'm buiding a comp buggy and this seems the cheapest way of upgrading diff strength, over Maxidrive internals for example. At the moment I'm running S3 landy diffs and want to weld the rear but don't have loads of bux to upgrade axles, ratio etc......Keen for any imput on the matter. cheers

DAS has done the nissan conversion, so he can give you more info.

Also look into the toyota conversion (lots of stuff on the board) - you keep the existing rangie brakes and housings so you end up with a lot better clearance than the nissan swap.

Ben, you should see the bottom of DAS's GQ diffs, they're a beauty. He's done a big shave and plate on them and so they've got heeps of clearance, but thats another task.

Slunnie's on the money.

Dave's done a great job on as limited budget. Ask him about his patented castor correction mod!

Another thought. You said you were on a budget and also building a comp truck. In the long term you may also find a Toy conversion on the front of the rover axle a good one because (please correct me if I'm wrong here.. as I know you will) I believe you can make the CV's in the Rover housing stronger (eg longfields, haultech CV's etc) than you can the GQ CV. As far as I'm aware there are not a lot of upgrades for the nissan axle short of using a GU housing with mumma CV's. The GQ CV is smaller.

Edit: The GQ CV is smaller than the GU unit, but probably still heaps stronger then a Rover one.

just figure a GQ diff welded up would probably survive wihtout major axle,cv upgrade ( running 35's at this stage ) though I like the full floating axles in the rangey. Not having much feedback from the toyota section but I'll keep asking around...thanx for all replies!

The rangy does have full floaters but the landy axles are no where even remotely near what the Patrol is. Although the Patrol is marked as a 1.30" I think it is (Landys are 1.24" full length) they are only that size up at the diff end, they then flare into the most massive axle, and are near indestructable.

35s can break a GQ CV, but you'd be giving it some stick.

I've done this conversion in my Rangie ute.
The front was a piece of piss but the rear had to have the mounts re welded.
I run 35's with a supercharged 253 no problem.
