over heating on a rocky???

has any one got this problem to with the 2.8 turbo diesel. on cool days it ok up hills the temp goes up. i looked at a rocky a couple of weeks ago and he had a raditor made up and he could go up the freeway at 90 and it would be cool i have to slow down to 60. has any put a bigger raditor out of another car into there rocky??

mine is only a NA diesel but when it started overheating the
raiator was crumbling apart....so got new rad. an it temps fine

Id guess you have a core problem. How are the fins on the core, especially around the bottom. If they're crumbly, get a new core. If they're fine, consider getting the tanks taken off and getting the core properly cleaned, each tube reamed. After a few years, even running coolant, the cores start to clog up, and this is a major cause of overheating.

Then do a complete block clean, remove the thermostat housing, and the block drain bung, and hose, hose, hose.

What type of fan do you run. If its a clutched type fan, it could be on the way out.

After a complete coolant system clean, I now run no engine driven fan on my F75, just 2 electrics, which I usually only have to use when beach driving. This is on a 2.8 Turbo Diesel.

hi al my little 2cents worth is check your resivour water bottle thing next to the radiator cause that might be full. well the reason i say that is because this is my first 4wd and i made the mistake of dilling that up so it overheated abit till the water went down to the right level. i know im stupid lol. oh and another thing does anyone here with the 2.8td aussie rocky have the same thing happen to them when im driving my temp goes to half the gauge but it hasnt risen over that yet is there a reason why? or is sopmething about to go wrong on my truck? anyway enough babbling keep on truckin yall.

Try your temp sensor
We had heaps of problems with our TD rocky when we first got it. Everytime it was going up a steep hill or under load on a hot day, it got very hot. So I changed the thermostat, added a thermo fan, flushed out the system a few times, new radiator, was starting to get real pi**ed off cause it was still overheating. Was going to sell it, then decided to change the temp sensor and now it is good. It turns out the sensor was to sensitive. When the guage was saying hot, it wasn't. Now it is great. We went up to Bunya Mtns last weekend and it was bloody hot. Up the steep hills it was fine. The person who had the car before us I think dodged things up a bit and probably put in the wrong sensor. Oh yeah if you do need to fix the radiator a hilux core fits and is a shite load cheaper than a rocky one. I did have the part no somewhere.
Our rocky still get to half when under lots of load on a hot day but yeah doesn't seem to get any hotter. Our MQ patrol we had was the same may be a TD thing.

thanks for all that wasnt sure if it was a standed thing for a rocky at less i know the radiator is big nough. get the radiator checked out the thermostat is fine i checked that i wanted to get a colder on but they dont make them. think i might invest in some electric fans. i could only go 100 on a flat and cool day and it would be half way on the gauge.

For the recore, check out the Hilux core, as said before. I had one fitted about 6 years ago, and it went great. After that is when coolant was used exclusively, and about a year ago, the core was reamed, and it was amazing how much crap came out.

well thats kinda good to hear i dont have to make one up. the guy with the bigger raditor had hi lux tanks and a hi ace core apparntly.

I have a three core radiator that also has larger top and bottom tanks. It is listed s a rocky part. All I had to do was minor mod to the fan guard and move the bottom two mount holes. Ezy pizzy. Sit on the Highway @110km aircon on fully loaded towing trailer. I've a 92 Td.

I had a custom made 3 core radiator fitted get the rad place to look under scat or delta with a 2.8 lt motor as the listings were wrong cost $395 to be made this was a trade price in South Oz. uses all the same mounts & brackets run cooler
