Looking to buy a '93 2.8 turbo diesel d/cab hilux, w/ aftermarket turbo
<not sure what size,brand,stage, & if its a roller bearing>,
(just standard; no blowoff valve, no wastegate, just inlets and outlets)
no intercooler fitted. (Engine type 3L).
The ute is not fitted with a snorkel at this present time, will fit 1 asap.


If i was to go through a water crossing or a pool/puddle of water of decent depth at a moderate speed, and water was to enter/splash up into the engine bay, from the turbo being at a fair temp, as well as the engine (naturally), can any damage what so ever occur to both items?

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

just avoid water if you got a diesel and no snorkel. are you concerned about cracking the very hot metal by hitting it with cold water?



p.s. you can't get a blow-off (read: show off) valve for a diesel from what i know...

I am concerned about the cold water hitting the tempritured steel, consiquencly maybe cracking, or any other damage, possibilites plz?
(and possibilities of damage to turbo plz). <unsure if its roller bearing>


If i was to install a snorkel, that assits breathing yeah, and also contributes to temp being a bit cooler due to cool, fresh air being sucked through?
Also, would a mid sized intercooler kit help with the overall situation?
+ a large thermo fan or twin mid sized.

Youre meant to weight the five to ten min mark or the time to check the depth of the water depth your about to cross to let the axle seal n shit to cool supposedly but who does most times its straight threw n don't be slowin the trip up

if you put a tarp on the front of your truck, the bow wave created should make a nice air pocket in the engine bay, which would be enough to keep all your hot bits dry. this is provided you dont stop while crossing.

i'm probably not the best person to ask, maybe a boiler maker - type person might be in the know how.

As deux said usage of a tarp is good but yeah cold water on a hot turbo is not good it can crack it .new one clown who got the turbo on his car red hot thought hmmm that needs cold water on it then cried when he farked it and yeah try not to stop when crossing a creek / pool . if u do and its deep hopefully u have a snorkel Othewise the water will get in the eng threw the exhuast system if its deep enough if u shut the eng off

any 4wd trainer will tell you that if you were to approach a deep water crossing it is the norm to let the vehicle cool down sufficiently before attempting to cross it.
