transfer case jumping out of gear *fixed with tech*

Post by stumped »

i know i posted up 'bout this a while back, but was pretty confusing then and didn't get any conclusive answers....

has anyone had drama's with their 1.3L sierra transfer case jumping from 4H back into 2H?? heard of anyone who's had the problem? know of any fixes?

that's what mine's doing, anytime driving along in 4H and bouncing a lil it'll jump back into 2H. changed some internals, starting to wonder whether it's a calmini 5.14 issue or not... but a mate had the same problem in his old sierra, with standard gearing.

help??? :?

yeah, but i wanna see if anyone knows stuff before we have to change it, it's a fiddly PITA.

prolly wouldn't do it myself, maybe with some other mates, or perhaps layton.... all depends on if/when it gets done and who's available and feels like helping me :D

I cant see how in gods name its doing that. Couldjust be my WT but it would have to go throught nutral and then into 2H to do that? Is that whats happenen? I have never heard of this problem due to camlini tranny gears and know a few people with them.

from 4H it's only gotta jump once to get to 2H. neutral is on the 4H to 4L side (on the right). from what i'm told, the gears themselves shouldn't cause the selector forks to move...

r you going over ruts when it jumps from gear??

I find mine does it only when i am getting a run up for a hill or beach run over other tracks.

Only other idea, might be the spring under the shaft?? not strong enough

cheers

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248626

samiguy: yup, seen this before. I chased the same problem with mine last summer. Whats happening is that the 4WD lock ring is not fully engaging the front output. My gears are shimmed properly. What I did was remove the front output housing, press off the front output shaft and place a shim between the bearing and front output shaft (I found a washer at the hardware store that worked pretty good). What this did was butt the front output shaft right up against the main gear shaft. Just make sure the shim is not too big, I just placed the front output housing back on without the gasket with a few bolts and made sure the front output spun freely and there was no gap between the two gasket surfaces, then I put it all back together and it worked great. When you take off that front output housing you will see how the front output shaft is slipping on the lock ring. The shim I used is as about as thick as a dime, whenever I rebuild a case now I add this shim, there always seems to be that gap between the main shaft and the front output shaft

link that was sent to me by nelligen, looks like it could be a cause.. gonna try this when i get a chance and see how it works. anyone heard/seen this before?

I run the calmini 5.14 and dont have this problem. I would start by checking the spigot on the front out put gear as they do have a habit of wearing wich allows to much float on the out oput gear causing it to jump out.It if is worn make sure you change the needle roller as well.

I can see it working as Suzuki dont sell cars with worn gears or aftermarket bearings in them!! If you have replaced the bearings with a cross referenced aftermarket bearing it could be a few thou narrower meaning this spacer is needed to get full gear mesh back, plus the gears are probably worn a bit making the mesh even worse. If you look at them they are relying on a very small contact patch after all.

MY MONEY IS ON THIS WORKING!!

Let us know the result.

MY MONEY IS ON THIS WORKING!!.... NOT TO ARGUE... BUT THE GEARS ARE NEW....THE BEARINGS ARE AFTERMARKET AND GEN BUT ALL ARE THE SAME....I KNOW THIS AS I CHECKED...

orrite... finally got around to doing the mod i mentioned as posted on pirate by samiguy.... and it worked like a charm!!! the shim made the gear and the fork mesh better and i haven't had it jump out of 4H since!! got a fairly good test as a tailshaft uni was flogged out and i had to drive in front wheel drive along a dirt track and some tar for 10-20kms

with mock up pics from my other transfer case, we did it while still in the car
