CB Aerial Mount Location

I've got a 90 Sierra softtop. Where is the best spot to mount an aerial?

My understanding is get it up as high as possible. I'm looking at a windscreen mount (similar to a mobile phone).
Due to the edges of the bonnet rolling over the standard bonnet type mount doesn't work and I have no bull bar.

Any suggestions or photos would be appreciated.

How about on the targa bar?

Maybe a roof rack style.

it depends a lot on the type of antenna you get, most common place is the bullbar. make sure bullbar has a good earth to chassis if it is not an indepenant antenna.

Is the antenna ground independant?

i sure others have more info on this.

I have mine mounted on the spare wheel bracket, seems to work quite well.

highest point, nice and easy, why not

failing that, the spare wheel mount is a good idea

Mounted the UHF in the car and I found a good location for the aerial.

At the top of the windscreen are the rubber stops for when it is laid down. I fashioned a small bracket that is mounted using the existing screws from the driver side one of these. I bought the cheapest rubber whip aerial (~30cm, $30) and mounted it to the bracket. I cut a small section from the rubber stop that allows the aerial to stick thru it. The cable goes in to the cabin at the driver side top corner of the windshield thru the foam bit. It then runs down the driver side A pillar and is held in place by 3M adhesive clips spray painted black (it looked better), under the dash to the CB mounted on the plastic tray on the passenger side.

Looks really neat and the reception has been exceptional from the aerial I think due its high position. The rubber whip aerial has already taken a pounding from branches and like still looks good.

A cheap aerial is just that. If you ae after good reception and range then a quality aerial makes a big difference. Also there are different aerials for different requirements. Some are good for long narrow bands of reception whilst others offer good all round range but without the distance component. It pays to get the right aerial for your intended use

My aerial is mounted on top of my hand held UHF
99% of the time I use it to talk to the car in front or behind me (20M)
it is good for a few K's and I can take it out of the car when I get home so it don't get nicked, I can put it in a bag when I cross a river or play in the mud and it still works fine, I can walk to the end of the winch rope and comunicate clearly with the driver and when I roll the car my aerial will still be intact
hand helds are not for everyone, but ask your self when do you use it and what range do you actualy need.

I have the same philosophy with car stereo and H4 headlights

JVC, Pioneer etc make underwater / boat speakers and decks... wouldnt be that hard to put them in a zuk!! hehe

my aerial is on the front bar... at least you can see it if its getting caught on something.

Thanks O/G, for me it works, my car rarely has a roof or doors yet I can park it in any carpark (yes Graham even Macca's) and rest asured that no crack head is going to slash my soft top to pinch my CB or stereo, cos there isn't one I can leave it out in the rain, I can hose it out on Sun arvo, it just dosn't matter.

Been there done that alien, you will find that they are sold as "weather proof" and once the tape deck is full of mud or the stereo's vents got flooded from behind, the music starts to sound a bit scratchy but it dosen't matter cos the rear of the speakers is packed with so much dried mud you can't hear what John Denver is singing anyway

mine's on the tube bar at the front.. but before that i had it mounted on the gutter behind the drivers head. ya can buy mounts for almost anywhere if ya go talk to a communications company

Mine are mounted on either side of the bonnet at the front,there is a hole in the gaurd just the right size for the cable to go throw,the mounting brackets from Dick Smith(Z shaped ?)have 3 holes in them,drilled a hole either side of the one allready in the gaurd,then simply bolt it all up.
The bolts and cable go under the bonnet out of sight,only problem I have had is pulled the cable off the ariel once.
As said earlier they are in sight so you can see them getting ripped off
