1.8 deisel

Post by benjamin78au »

hi all my brother has a 1.8L toyota deisel motor (he thinks) we have looked for specs or confirmation he thinks it is out of an old hilux or someting like that. did they come out with these motors, as i have searched and can't find diddly squat. If any one knows about em we chasing the hp and torque, as it is currently in a boat and we are thinking about ripping it out as it is chewing 20L of fuel an hour under steam and not going any where fast, thinking a 2.4 or a 3 L hilux motor will do the job. We just chasing info on the 1.8 to see if it is worth the effort of pulling it out. any help would be most appreciated.

probably a 1C motor, which came out in corollas (not available here) - pretty worthless, I think they make something pathetic like 35kW. shouldn't use that much fuel though - maybe put a bigger/higher pitch prop on it and run it at lower rpm?

had a quick google but couldn't find any specs on them.

what sort of boat is it?

it is a 22ft fly bridge crusier, the previous owner for some reason , pulled out the petrol motor, and stuck this desiel one in , we go out to an island which is 18 Natical mile and back and we chew 70 to 80 L of diesel in a round trip. and we only getting 8 to 9 knots. this is at 3000 rpm, we only need a few more knots to get it on the plane and this will fix the economy, we have tried all various pitch and prop size, the largest will get the same economy but at 2000rpm.

thinking about getting a cheap 2.4 or 3L hilux diesel, and putting it in other wise brother has a petrol out of a mq nissan he might throw in.
Any other suggestions on , motors, thinking hilux as we have some gear here to marinize it (eg water heat exchanger and that )

I reckon go the MQ motor, they are very reliable and common as muck, parts are cheap and plentiful and they have good power/weight - might use a bit more fuel than the hilux diesel motors but the extra power and lower weight will be worth it especially since you already have the motor. drop the 1C over the side... but wait, hmm that 1CT is pretty small eh, I wonder if we could jam it in my friends Northshore 27, the 8hp yanmar single in there is alower than a wet week.

another potentially cheap option would be to turbo up the 1C - if you only need a few more horses to get on the plane, a mild boost would do, should be plenty of space around it for plumbing, get the turbo off a pulsar ET or cordia etc - should go well with continuous water cooling.

also it should be possible to squeeze a few more hp out of the 1C by turning up the fuel a bit, if it is not already overfuelling at full throttle (black smoke) - would need a pic of the fuel pump to see if/how to turn it up though.

cheers
