guys i have a hilux with a 2.8 diesel, and have just been offered by one of dads friends a turbo off his old 2.8 GQ

bit of a cop out but....
phone Garrett / AXT and ask them about flows between the models they make for both engines.
they know turbos and helped me with the same question when i thought i might be able to put a T3 from a different motor onto mine.
the main concern is matching manifolds - sometimes might be more $troube than it's worth. the bloke did say in some cases it works in terms of the turbo wheel operatioin is based on output volumes....but not in my case

Not sure what you would do with the manifolds. As the GQ 2.8td is a 6cylinder. But being the sam capcity of motors. The turbo size should still suit.
Would probably be only good for the turbo it self. The rest you would just get for using for parts to make your own inlet pipes ect.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
You can use the manifold off your engine and cut the flange off the turbo end of the GQ manifold and weld it to the lux manifold. You can use the same dump pipe and you can get any exhaust place to make the rest for you. The biggest thing would be the plumbing of the oil lines. If the GQ turbo comes with the lines take them and measurements for what you need into pirtek or enzed and they can make up some new ones from scratch. All you need to do then is plumb the air piping, get it tuned and go out and test it
voila. New turbo lux.

it is that easy if and only if you have the welding skillz required - welding cast iron is a bit of a trick and if done badly the results will be disappointing. the alternative is to get a manifold from a turbo mob, or scratch build one - and that isn't as hard as it sounds if you have some welding skills - header flange from an exhaust shop, some steampipe bends, and cut out the turbo flange. can even do it with straight bits of pipe if you're not too concerned with flow characteristics.
. don't worry too much about the turbo sizing - it will be close enough.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, with the GQ turbo lying in the shed. The wreckers had a complete Surf turbo setup going cheap- would it be easier to adapt the GQ turbo to that (assuming the Surf turbo isn't as good as GQ one)?
Somebody told me Toyota uses Garrett style turbos and Nissan uses something else, so obviously won't be bolt in fit.

Nissan uses garrett turbos, toyota uses toyota turbos. the flanges are similar but not the same - making an adaptor is a pain because the studs are too close to where they need to be to make a tidy bolt together solution.
what motor are you bolting it on to, and what did the surf setup come off?

Motor is 3L, talked to wreckers 2day and the cheap setup was gone (off 2LT- II) so I'll prolly forget that idea unless I see something under $500 again.
I was quoted about $500 for a custom stainless manifold when I was looking at a Garret GT30 bearing turbo. This included a custom dump pipe to suit an external waste gate.
