WE Rock courses
Myself, Adrian and Tony went out to Rover Park to sort out the courses for this competition. The competition site is totally new and absolutely awesome. The courses will be alot more technical with bigger ledges and more offcamber approaches compared to PUOSU last year. We have a few technical crack lines to really sort out the slow crawlers as well.
We took my orange buggy out there to test a few of the lines and am happy to say that the courses are going to work extremely well. I drove two of the courses (without any cones) and couldnt drive 4 of them (wasnt game to try too hard) and didnt play on any of the rest. In total there will be 8 to 10 courses depending on how we run for time over the weekend.
Now because we are really trying to push things along in terms of hard we are making the courses we felt that it is still necessary to prove some of the obstacles. Basically some of the lines that I thought looked really good drove a lot harder than expected although still possible. We learnt alot about the amount of grip that these rocks provide and how some of the offcamber sections will work. In my mind taking my rig out there and playing on a few of the obstacles is probably the most bemeficial thing that we could do in terms of making this competition a spectator success. The stuff we are going to make these guys drive will absolutely blow you away. These courses are technically just so much harder than the PUOSU event we held last year.
I had thoughts about running the unlimited full size class here but we have decided against this because we just dont have the terrain for them. We also decided to combine the Super Modifieds and Legends class vehicles for this event simply because I dont believe there is a big enough destinction between the rigs we have here at the moment and also we dont really have the numbers. Next year when the series points count towards the world championship we will definately have to split the classes. We may also decide to split them later this year depending on the numbers of rigs that get built.
To remove any advantage that Tony or Adrian have by seeing my rig on some of the courses we will make one of then run first on every course. Probably the only sort of advantange I see them having over anybody alse would be that they will have more of an idea of how much momentum (meaning throttle) some of the obstacles need to be driven. By making one of them run first on every course will allow everybody else that same advantage. In the actual competition my rig will be driven by Mick Garner (guy who competed in the Mog at BOTC). I dont see him having any advantage by me trying a few lines in my rig. Probably the only thing I could do is to change the setup on my rig to suit the courses better and Im not going to do that. Mick is going to do that on his own.
Doing the course design this way will guarantee that we will produce the most exciting driving possible and the best competition possible. And I think that this is a necessary thing at this point in time. It would have been nice if I could have gone down to Rover Park on my own and set the courses without driving them in a vehicle that will be in the competition. But at this point we need all the vehicle numbers we can get and Im not confident enough to be able to set extremely hard courses without driving some parts of them. The small trade off to doing the course design this way is that Tony and Adrian may have a slight advantage going into the competition although we are addressing that the best we can.
Tony would probably still win the event blind folded and Adrian is still going to roll his rig a few times so I dont think their advantage is going to change anything anyway

Or they could run dead last, cousre even though it is rock there is still some dirt in between the rocks that might get moved around and the odd hole get dug here and there, and maybe the odd rock get moved, allthought the size rocks that might get moved would change things that much. just some food for thought.

Looks good to me !! I've got no problem with anyone testing the courses, as long as it isn't too repetitive etc etc. As you've said this year isn't about everything being on the line it's more of a getting used to things year and i think i speak for everyone when i say how much we appreciate the time that Sam, Tony and Adrian are giving up to further the sport of rock crawling in Australia !! Good work guys.

That is a valid point but as I see it, when it comes to obsticles this difficult, I'd hate to be up first. Especially off camber stuff

Gee Thanks mate, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!
On the topic of us running first, well to be totally honest with you all i couldn't care less where i run. First on the stage or last on the stage as long as i am there having fun!
The sole reason for either myself or tony running first is we have seen where the stages are going to be and seen some of the lines that may be used. Now in all honesty when Sam sets the stages with the CONES we both will not be there. Seeing someone try and drive a line without markers to stay between is a lot different to driving the same line with markers. This been said even if we didn't run first and someone else did are they going to drive it any different? I personally believe that after everyone walks the stages we are all on the same playing field!
As for running last been a dis-advantage, that may also true. But its what you make of it! Dirt to Rock Transitions will always be part of our sport and is common in the USA comp scene. So yes the stages will get the odd hole here or there but read the rules regarding Rock stacking and you will soon see that there is no major dis-advantage if you play smart and in some cases the removal of loose soil will uncover and expose rock which then of course creates more traction!
A few years ago i represented Australia in another form of sport. One of the biggest things i was told, was that "you only have control over what YOU do as a competitor, what the other person does you cannot effect the result in anyway". I relay this back to RockCrawling and what we are talking about. If you run first, fifth, tenth or last it shouldn't matter, when you are driving NOTHING anyone else has seen or done will effect how you perform!!!!
Like i said at the start, it doesn't worry me where i start, as long as i am there. We are just doing this to try and stop anyone saying that we have an advantage by seeing the courses 7 weeks before the event!
Guts wrote:But they have allready seen the off caber bits with a buggy simalar to theres.
No i havn't, no off-cambered stages were driven.
And Sams lockless is nothing like my buggy! Looks similar but thats about it. It doesn't have lockers (which makes it do things that a locked car doesn't and vice versa), its heavier, it has a LOT less wheel travel, has less Horse Power , has different tyres with different traction and its weight distribution is nothing like mine.
In another five weeks time i won't even be able to remember what the stages looked like and as i said earlier the position of the cones is what makes the event! This is all left up to Sam to do!
Agree 110%, know this from helping with causes in other comps. BTW I don`t care where you or anybody runs, was only giving some food for thought so others that might have a problem with it can decide what they would be happy with.POS wrote: Now in all honesty when Sam sets the stages with the CONES we both will not be there. Unless I win lotto I will not be there

I hear what you are saying. I think on these courses, where there are some very sharp courners at the bottom of the climbs, we will see a fair bit of rock stacking at the bases to give the rear tyres a bit more of a ramp to get onto the rock. Where I was driving (on the easiest part of the ledges) you could really feel the rear tyres hit the vertical rock and want to bounce back. So I think that everybody is going to be stacking rocks at the base of the climbs (there will be about 4 of these types of climbs in total) as opposed to digging holes. Therefore I think that running first on these courses will be a disadvantage. Once the rigs are up off the dirt and onto the rock the course wont change much.
If rockstacking wasnt allowed then running last would probably be the most difficult.
I think that teamwork is going to play a much bigger role on these courses than what we have seen so far. The spotter is really going to have to work hard on these tracks.

Sam, we have a special course for you! Its about 5 metres long, thats should be long enough for you to break you weak arsed Suzuki gearbox again!
Just stirrin, it will be good to have you up here.
Even though you'll spend most of it watching from the sideline!!

It should be really quite nice. The days could still get warm to hot but nothing over the top and the nights should be good aswell. I would throw in a jumper/waterproof jacket just in case it comes across cool or rains.
