I`m in the process of doing a V8 conversation on my lux, having done most of it myself or from the help of good mates the conversion will cost $5000 + or - $200 including engineers report and a complete new exhaust.
A v6 might be a bit cheaper but not by much.
If you can`t do the electrics yourself then you are best of sticking with a carby motor as it could cost lots paying somebody to do it.
As for which is better, I think it comes down to which one you really want. I ALMOST put a V6 into mine (have the motor) but decide that since I have always wanted a V8 that I just wouldn`t be happy with a V6. All the people with V6`s in their luxes will say that it is the best one and all the people with a V8 will say it is the best thing. All I`ll say is if you want a V8 then go one, but if you don`t care then just go the V6 its all up to want you want.

What do you want to use your ute for? V6 commodore conversions are almost becoming 2nd nature now for some people... probably cost you around 2/3k in parts, but if you thrash it with a manual gearbox.. it wont take the pressure...
Really comes down to what you want you ute for as to what engine/gearbox combo you go for.

i went thru this whole debate myself a little while ago, i ended up deciding on a 2.8 diesel out of the later model, mainly for simplicity, and the tourque available down low
dont get me wrong, i'd love a V8, and in my next truck i'll probably just say stuff it, why not
but unless its comp work or constant off road, i really do believe that a diesel or v6 is the only way to go
just my 2c worth

Been thru this too, but without actually completing any conversion to date I can't comment with authority.
However from what I have gathered;
> Commodore V6 with T700 auto are nice compact engine and I would believe easiest to work on and service, economical, reasonable spread of power and cheap parts for the future, as Guts said about $5k if you do yourself.
> Supercharged commo V6 would be best package for lux but they are so $$$$$ to get hold of (>$4k).
> 5M or 7M Toyota straight 6 motors- bolt in fit but still require mods to cooling system- good power but reliabilty ??? Not so many parts around???
> Lexus V8 pretty good, a bit lacking on low rpm torque but so strong and hopefully reliable. Have heard they are better waterproofed than commo v6, more challenging to install, tight fit in engine bay (skinned knuckles).
> All carbied stuff- expensive to run unless lpg conversion
> Diesels- hard to fit one that produces big hp in lux engine bay 1KZTE an option but seems as complicated in wiring as injected petrol.
Hoping to put Lexus in mine one day.

.
if you want a lexus V8 and your not doing it your self you need to have at least 10 000 to spend on it for a proper job. they can be bodged in for less but you'll have alot of trouble with it.
oh yeah skinned knuckles will be the least of you worries will doing the conversion
Im here for the sausage!

im looking at getting a Front cut of a prado TD to drop into my lux when the 2.8 gives up.....
if you run the 1KZTE, you HAVE to run the R151 gearbox, The G52 will shyt itself quick smart behind the 3.0TD....
Prado front cut gets you the 1KZTE, the Gearbox, AND the intercooler
