Mandrel bent extractors?
Moderator: Tiny
Mandrel bent extractors?
Just been told by an exhaust specialist that no one (apart from MRT) makes mandrel bent extractors for the Feroza.
Is that true??? Does everyone here just have press bent ones? And if so do you still receive more power and better fuel consumption?
I don't want to go MRT due to some of the bad reports I've heard.
Thanks!

That's probably correct, my Hurricanes are press bent. I know Lukey's are press bent too. Probably doesn't make that much difference and the header design (collector pipe length, 4-1 or 4-2-1) would most likely have more effect on power.
I even got talked out of getting the rear section done in mandrel bent. The guy who did mine has a lot of experience in sprint car racing and said the little extra power gained wouldn't be worth the extra $$$.

I've got a full Lukey sports system on my feroza
Consists of lukey 4-1 headers, flex joint, hiflow cat and full 2 1/4 inch exhaust. I'm very happy with the result I swear it's got more torque down low
Most of the guys suggested I only go 2 inch claiming I would loose down low torque but they were wrong
If you want a good exhaust shop go and see Gary from Beenleigh mufflers & brakes. Tell him James sent you
He did my exhaust late last year
sounds like a wrx now

Mine sounds like a boxer engine now too ..... pity it doesn't have the power of a WRX....
James all the exhaust theory would suggest that you would have less torque at low revs compared to a 2" system. Basically your power and torque peak should be higher in the rev range; your exhaust gases will flow slower due to the larger piping meaning they won't be scavenged out the cylinders as well at low revs. 2 1/4 " is huge for a 1.6 litre engine.

Thanks guys. I have booked the car in to receive a set of Lukey etractors. Will be interesting to see what difference it makes!
Also I want to replace the oxygen sensor after the extractors are on. I have read that the Charade on is the best and has the right cable length for the extractors. Any tips you can give me before I do it? I have the articles printed out on how to do it just want to make sure there are no gotchas.
Thanks.

Awesome thanks for that guys.
You sure the Lukey's are a 4-1? I asked the exhaust guy that is fitting them if they were 4-2-1 and he said they were? I better check before I get them as I want 4-2-1 low down torque.
Cheers

ben, lukey are 4-1.... the hurricanes are 4-2-1....
edit: forgot to mention, mrt are 4-1 as well.... from what dave and i have been able to find out.... only the hurricanes make the 4-2-1 design for the ferozas.

MRT are 4-2-1 as well.
IIRC when I was looking Lukey were the only 4-1 design I found. Redback and Genie also made some to suit.
Lukeys were around $160, my Hurricanes were $275 (prices from different exhaust shops, supply only).
MRT are good in the respect that they are the only ones that will bolt straight on. All the others will need an exhaust shop to fit them and need cutting and welding to be fitted.

Well after a lot of stuffing around from Right Price Exhausts in Moss St I finally got extractors! The guy I originally spoke to got everything wrong! They had nothing in stock! Lucky I phoned before hand...
Anyway I ended up getting Hurricane extractors as they are the only ones that are 4-2-1 and the guy said he even thinks they are mandrel bent! Either way I got them for a good price due to the stuff around! Got them fitted which included new gasket, studs, double braided flex joint (welded on extra) for $340. I reckon that's pretty good.
Only thing is though that I haven't really noticed much of an increase in power...sometimes I think it is but most of the time it's the same. I haven't changed the oxy sensor though yet so do you think this could be it? I will do it next weekend.
I like the sound of them though!

Certainly agree that price is good!
Your oxy sensor could be the cause of the problems- have you checked it out with a multimeter to make sure it's earthed to the chassis?
Also get your ignition timing checked; I've found the low end response varies a lot with just a small timing change. What size is the remainder of your piping? I reckon mine felt to be best with the rear section standard (ie. more torque at low revs)

No I haven't checked it out with a multimeter yet...will try and do this week sometime.
Yeah I have a timing light but I can't see where the timing marks are??? Can you let me know where they are? I've just had to do it by ear so far!
The rest of the piping is standard size as $$$ flow is not great right now. I plan to do it later on but I was thinking the same as you...having a smaller diameter pipe would keep better back pressure wouldn't it?

IIRC there's an indent in the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. You'll see the timing mark reference bracket down there too. Just make sure you blank off/ disconnect the vacuum advance to the distributor when you set it.
You want the fastest flow (gas velocity) for your extractors to work best. Smaller piping should be best at lower revs- the downside being your peak power at high revs will be less (because of the restriction the smaller pipe will give then.) It's a balancing act to get the best of both worlds.

I have a '93 F300 Wide Track with Genie Extractors, 2 1/4 straight through press bent. I was supposed to be getting the Hurricanes I think they were but couldn't fit them due to a/c. Full system cost me around $550 maybe a little more.
Whats the down low torque like now with the genie headers and 2 1/4 inch system Has it improved down low response or have u gained more topend power

I've got Hurricanes and aircon?!? Shouldn't have been any problems fitting them.

Hey I just phoned up Repco to see how much the Oxy Sensor is and if they have any in stock and he said he would have to order it in and it would be $115. Didn't I read somewhere on here that they are only $60-$80? Or is $115 the normal price?
Cheers

Yeah the part number you gave me is the one I asked for. That's correct isn't it?
Well i just rang Aussie Auto in Beenleigh and they said about $85 which is a lot better than $115!!!! Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper?

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to everyone . Firstly the extractors and exhaust have helped down low heaps but as for more power noot real sure as I had been driving my baby around with the ignition timing a tooth out. I read on another post that someone was having trouble with theirs pinging heaps fixing that problem fixed that and the Fezza is running like a dream. So I am not sure if it has helped up topend but I do know down low it has helped because when off road it is a lot more responsive than it used to be even before the pinging issue. Secondly the Hurricanes and a/c well as I said in my first post I am not 100% sure. I have had the exhaust for a while now and while reading this thread Hurricanes rang bells. The fact of the matter is that when I got the exhaust done the extractors that had been ordered didn't fit because I had a/c and I was told that I could get Genies so I said yes. Sorry for the incorrect facts about Hurricanes . Murcod how does it sound with them on I have a fart mobile I have been told but that could also because the cat is hollowed out. Besides which who cares they are just jealous that I have one and they don't !!!
When I grow up I want to be a Monster Truck.
Mine sounds WRX ish at low revs- seems to be fairly common with the Feroza no matter what brand extractors. I get a fair bit of burbling on throttle over run, but the noise inside doesn't sound much louder than standard.
The muffler is probably the biggest thing that will change the note. Mine is a 2 1/4" Marathon stainless (had it lying around from another car....) and is fairly bid three chamber style. I was going to fit a resonator as well but there just isn't enough space underneath. The rest of the piping is 2" stainless, with standard cat.
Dangerous Dave or Crowey are probably the best people to describe what mine sounds like.
