newbie needs advise on body lift

hi all, wow, great board, i own a 93 feroza sxp and am wanting to do a body lift, can anyone help me with the size and length of those bolts that hold down the body. i am located in sydney and was wondering if anyone knew where i could find some bolts long enough to replace the originals? also are all the 10 bolts the same size?

How did ya find out about this site ???

First question to you is:
How big is your body lift gonna be ??? 1"?? 2"??

Answer to first question might seem pretty obvious but.....

the bolts you need will need to be same size as original + length of body lift !!!

And I'm pretty sure all the bolts are the same length. Murray will have a better idea as he has just done a 2" body lift to his Ferwoaza last X-mas.

If the Rocky is anything to go by, the bolts are not all the same lengths, cause the body mounts are not all the same thickness, and the front and rear bolts go upward into body cavities, where as the centre 6 bolts go down from body to chassis. You may have to go to a specialist bolt supplier to get the correct length bolts with the correct size and thread. I modified the centre 6 mounts to accept a more common bolt, but had to search hard for the correct bolts for front and rear mounts.

well i am thinking 2" i wonder if i need eng cert. heck who cares.yep 2"!
So can i just go down to the local bunnings and pick up bolts that would fit? although i have a feeling bunnings isn't going to have high tensile. :?:

Yeah, I put it in his message board the other night........there's always heaps of people that write in with questions but unfortunately Mike has been really busy with work and stuff that he finds it difficult to get the time to reply to all the posts.

At least with this forum, there are heaps of people to get their experiences from.

In regards to your body lift, check out Murrays website http://www.members.ozemail.com.au/~mgfox/ . I'm not sure if he's posted all the details about his body lift, but he has become the 'new' Mike since Mike traded his Feroza in on the Surf !

Don't forget steering column, brake lines, fuel filler and ......... what are you going to do about your bumpers ???

totally didn't even think of that! i knew of the brake lines, radiator and maybe the changing of gears to be a bit of a problem but what else am i setting myself up for, it all sound pretty ugly. oh i have TJM bullbars,that could be a problem. sheeet...

Sorry for the long delay guys, sisters wedding on the weekend.

Okay, for hardware I used nylon lift blocks 50mm high by 70mm diameter. These are probably a little too wide so I had to put them above the existing rubber bushes in there. The holes were 1/2". Bolts were 10mm x ~140-150mm long. For the rear 2 bolts, reuse 2 of the middle ones (longest stock) as they have a weird pitch that is very hard and expensive to get. For the front 2 bolts, we broke the nuts off using a chisel so we could use new nuts and bolts without having to worry about thread pitch.

Had to drop the radiator 2". There were 2 holes already 2" lower for the top 2 bolts and just drilled 2 new holes for the bottom ones. The vaccuum hoses had to be replaced with longer ones as well.

Rear hard brake lines, bent the bracket and detached them at one point, just so they aren't so tight. Will make up new brackets for them so they are secure.

To actually do the lift, loosen all the bolts but leave one side still secured by a few turns of the nut. Take off the bolts from the other side. I used a floor jack and a piece of wood up under the tub. Very very slowly jacked up the side, checking for anything that looks like binding, streching after each lift of the jack (slow but best way to do it). Once I had it high enough, I put the blocks in, dropped the bolts through, and put the nut on 1 or two turns. Then did the same with the other side.

Then just fixed it all up, tightened, quick offroad test, tightened again...

To add to Murrays comments regarding things on the lift, some other things I found when I did mine, (Rocky) Extend the fuel filler, this has turned out to be the most troublesome part of the lift. I originally extended the plastic filler hose by the appropriate amount, but didnt quite get it right. Over time, and with hard off road use, the original braising that connected the metal filler neck into the tank cracked due to the pull at an angle. An easy solder job, If you have a diesel, harder to do with a petrol due to fumes. With the steering column, in the engine bay at either end of the shaft, there should be 2 unis with splines, loosen the splines, and this should give you enough for a reasonable lift. Then there may be a problem with shifters fouling on the edge of the tunnel hole. I fixed this by remanufacturing the transfer case shifter, and removing some of the bend in the gearbox shifter.

Just thinking out loud.......BUT............

What would be the problems of making 2" spacers for your fuel tank :?:

I know that it's relatively easy to drop, I wondering if you could add something to lift it so you don't have to get extensions welded onto your filler neck ???

What do people think about that :?

Rocky tanks bolt UP under the chassis. I cut the original plastic fuel filler hose on the straight and added an appropriate length of metal tube to lengthen it. Still had dramas with the join cracking.

Only had to drill 2 holes for the lower points of the radiator.

Had to remove the two stock nuts for the front 2 body mounts.

No other drilling was required.

yeah ferozius is absolutely right! you should do it man step by step instructions like what mike did. you will be the body lift pioneer....well, pioneer in a sense that you would be the first to document the process and share with world... :)
