have wondered what they are since the day i got the car...
hopefully the red light doesn't mean anything bad. It comes on when the engine is under high load at revs.

Yeah my orange one came on at high revs.
When I put my 1JZ i hooked the sensor pressure line to my manifold and the green light still worked when i came on boost, the orange one doesnt work at all. Now ive ripped the sensors out of my engine bay, obviously the green one doesnt work but the orange stays on all the time, obviously to tell you something is not right.

If the red light is on it's running over 7-8 pound boost. Too much boost and its stops the fuel to the motor, wind the boost back to 6 or so psi and it will run a heap better.

it's pretty easy, you just need to adjust the preload on the wastegate actuator.
now to actually answer the question; the green light is triggered by a 2psi pressure switch attached to the inlet. the orange light is triggered by a 10 psi pressure switch on the inlet. there is no mystical fuel cutout on the mechanically injected engines (up to 1990).
