40 series steering Q's

Post by DIRTY ROCK STAR »

Q: Did the later model 2F engines have a different harmonic balancer with extra pulley for the air con/Power steering?

Q: What model arms are best to go on SPOA 40, running a Fj60 power steering set up? looking at tie rod strength and ease of fitting? Not sure if it matters but i have 60 series disc brakes on it now.

Q: 55 series column cut down apparently forms a part of the linkage, what goes from that column to the chassis mounted box? and how much roughly needs to be cut down?

Q: Anything else unforseen i need to add to my shopping list,( i am getting 60 series box, pump, brackets etc verrry soon. 83lux to pickup in next couple of days for me.) Any tips in general?

Oh and the first person to say "go search" will be raped by a mountain goat (or 83lux)!

YO

few ideas here - http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... c&start=30

column
55 column has a uni joint right at the firewall where base plate bolts through - not yet heard of someone who has done it
(i have one you can have it for cheap i used 60)
the 60 protrudes a bit - but you don't get the uni joint
these are the harder bits to find - i ended up mating 2 hilux uni ends (they have large spline one end small on other) the big ends fit the 60 shaft and the shaft you need to connect to box on chasssis

intermediate shaft
you could use a bundera or 75 column which may need to be re-lengthened to do that

arms - 75 series for 40 axle

steering knuckles - with spring over i would "consult a specialist" lots of people make the high steer arms just sniff out the $right ones. personally that's something i wouldnt bodge eh

be wise crusty one and change the oil seals on the box before its all put together

Cuting & steering you should not mention in same sentence.
Think collaspeable shaft from box to coloumn as the thought of getting steering shaft through chest is not good.
And umm search :P

You'd have to do something incredibly mean to make your 40 want to stab you in the chest with it's own steering column!! Surely?

dont forget to weld in crush tubes where the steering box mounts to the chasssis rail...if you forget these like I have seen on one particular vehicle the steering will end up crap when the box starts to become loose due to flex and distortion of the chassis rail..
I used m12 high tensile bolts grade 8.8 ,crush tubes and plated the rail and after 8 months of hard wheeling it is still solidly fixed to the rail...
crush tubes can be made from heavy wall tube steel with say half inch inside diameter to suit the bolts or use 20 mm round bar and bore out the centre in a lathe to half inch...
