80 series starter playing up

Post by red80 »

been having problems with my starter, it clicks a few times (like when you have a flat battery) then will engage and work. Sometimes it works first time sometimes it takes 5 or 6 goes. Doesn't bother me too much, as long as it starts eventually, but my wife drives it and is allways letting me know about it. Reco costs lots of $$$ and was wondering if anyone knows of something simple to check first.

Check the solenoid. It may just need a clean. Or replace
it for around $50 bucks maybe.

it is the contacts in the solenoid, they are easily replaceable and cost about $10 from an auto electrician.

What dumdunce said. It will eventually stop working (mine took about a month) and your missus will slap you. Get a pair of contacts from the auto elec. I got upgrade ones with nearly twice the contact area. Pull the starter out and swap them. If you are switched on mechanically it will take you an hour. Lube up the bits that need it with grease and it will last you ages.
