Adjusting handbrake on FJ 40's

Howdy guys and gals if there are any here!

My old mans' just got his FJ 40 on the road. We've rebuilt a diesel motor and put it into the FJ 40 body. Everythings fine apart from the damn handbrake. Its a Drum brake thats bolted to the transfercase and the rear prop shaft bolts to the otherside of it. As i'm sure some of you all ready know.

Does anyone know how to adjust the damn thing. At the mo its not working at all. I can only assume that it has brake shoes inside it that probably need replacing. But I thought i'd try to adjust it first. So if anyone knows how, can you please let me know.

Ah its like that is it? He kinda needs a handbrake as he bought the car to tow his new boat. So he'd like to come back from fishing to find the car and trailer still in the car park no in the drink!

There is an adjuster between the B/Plate and transfer at the bottom 10mm spanner possibly seized. Or oil from the seal you can be getting into a hole can of worms in that drum. Good news is that the shoes are cheap and you can get all the springs.

um leave it in gear... that'll work as well as a transfer mounted handbrake.

seriously, on the front (part pointing towards the front of the car) there should be a 10 or 12 mm bolt sticking out. turn that adjusts the shoes up a bit

cable can be adjusted in the cab, (on my 40 anyway)

but most likely inside the drum (take off driveshaft, then big nut 30 or 32mm from memory) pull the drum housing. you'll see your problem

on mine i have had the circlips break, so that the drums just flop about,

or a slow oil leak from the transfer case turns it into a greasy goo pit with no friction

If u've got a 40 u dont need a handbreak :rofl:

Just chuck it in 1st Low range....i was pullin apart my near diff and had to turn the driveshaft, i thought it was a bit hard to turn( but i could still turn it by hand), then i realised i had my handbreak on

Gotta love the 40's

you will soon know where parks are agaisnt kerbs etc.

18 months with a 40. 0 months with a handbrake working.

but yo uget over these small things.

it is a dilemna when needing to stop and start on big hills when wheeling.

I have to leave mine in gear with two chocks under the wheels.. cos i lhave a driveway thats on a 45 degree angle and every morning i expect to find it in the backyard of the house across the street.

I'm driving it around at the moment to put some k's on the clock and so far i've rolled into the fence at the back of my carport and rolled it out of a car park at work with me standing out side the vehicle. This is sooooo much fun! :roll:

and i've only been driving it for a day.

what are you people doing wrong? my 40 hasn't had a handbrake for 3 years and i have not had it roll anywhere.

Had a 40 for 12 years. Keep up the regular spanner work and it works fine. If it doesn't work then you aren't stroking it enough....

See the problem is it aint a bj42 lx with the handbrake on the rear wheels :finger:

Not so long ago in Hobart, my 40 actually DID end up in the backyard across the street. Luckily no damage was done to the house or my 40, but when I got in, the bloody handbrake was still fully on! A bit like the other handbrake in my life, the misses!

Took the 40 off road today at a local track. I was extremely impressed. Mind you, i still haven't got the handbrake working and it would've come in handy for a few dodgy hill starts!

I usually drive a daihatsu feroza and the stock 40 is twice as good! I'm sure its just because of the feroza's independant front suspension.
