the technicalities/legalities of exhausts

ok so due to an 'incident' my truck cant legally be driven by me for the next 3 months so i'm thinking that the money i save on juice will be put towards a few mods for her. one mod i'm thinking of doing is exhaust conversion, i.e. a truck exhaust stack for her. what i am thinking of doing is fitting a snorkle to the driver's A piller, moving the pre-filter to the driver's side of the block (there's quite a bit of room to work with there) and leaving myself with a bit of space on the passenger's side.

thinking of removing the exhaust from the manifold back, and having a truck stack on the passenger's side A piller. obviously there's a lot of heat being emitted from an exhaust so is it going to be too hot to run it in a similar fashion to a snorkle, through a hole in the fender, or would it have to go from the manifold, under the bottom of the fender and right up the outside of it?

and it is illegal to run without a muffler, i'm thinking this is an obvious yes, as it will probably rank too high in the dB ratings without it. if i was to move the muffler up into the engine bay (i think room-wise it wont be a problem from the looks of it), what problems would surface because of this?

i'm thinking of doing it because i want a bigger bore exhaust and i'm already constantly bending and cracking the end of the exhaust on rocks and ledges as it is lol

what truck do you have? and what engine are you running? you will find it will be downright illegal to run an exhaust up the pillar there as it will get way too hot, so burns will be harsh, also exhausts have to clear the last opening window.

there is no room in the engine bay for a muffler for a start, you would also have to fab up some new headers as you would have a large trap in the exhaust,

also, if its petrol, you do require some back pressure, othewr wise, i have been told you can burn the valves,

we were sussing it out for a mates diesel gq ute and he decided it wasnt worth the hassel....as a car that came out with a rear exhaust must keep a rear exhaust.....

So downright illegal...... but personally if i had a ute id do it..... just do it properly as we see to many with homemade shitter stacks that look like shit if you cant do it yourself get a professional like maroochy exhaust to do it...

Apart from being illegal, if you had it on the A pillar every time you wound the window down you would have a cabin full of exhaust fumes

I have a shorty GQ Safari and fitted a 125 channel as a rear bumper, then I cut a hole in it to allow the exhaust pipe to run out through the hole. This stops the pipe from getting bent when backing up into banks, rocks etc.

i did similar with my old mq got a hole saw out drilled stright through bumper took car the exsaust shop and got them to replace from rear muffler with end just on the inside of hole.

this worked a treat as i had already destroyed a muffler by reversing into a bank

there is actually a marked hole in the end bumpers on GQ's. they are about 4in round, piss easy to cut out , theres a few like this in our club.. looks good and out of the way.
