Whining sound - 80 series cruiser

Post by Spoon »

Hey guys so I got the car in pretty good condition after a front end rebuild and got the part time kit installed, all has been well but I have noticed after say 20-25 mins driving it makes a loud whining sound from the engine bay, and I mean loud, now I now it can't be a failed bearing in the motor itself otherwise temps would skyrocket but I can't seem to nail it down to anything in particular.

Anyone heard of this before and know what causes it/things to look for?

Btw 1FZ-FE 92 model

Thanks in advance

Edit: Another thing I noticed is the fact it sounds like a cricket in the gearbox or something, this is another sound that I am hearing when doing sort of over 80kmhr. Now you got two problems to help me with :D
Edit: All fixed, was power steering

Viscous coupling in the fan. Will cut in and out as you drive along etc when ever the temp moves up a little

My mate had the same thing in his 80 petrol. Power steering pump. Try some heavy oil in it and if the noise improves, it would indicate that is the source.

Take it to a mechanic for a listern and he will tell you what it is....it could be anything from water pump to air con belt idler to steer pump to viscous fan...all have a different sound...
