4AFE engine swap
4AFE engine swap
Has anyone thaught about doing a 4AFE engine swap (same block as the 4AGE but narrow head twincam) it should be the same as a 4AGE in terms of mounting it due to same block but there is supposed to be more torque down low instead of all top end in the 4AGE and these engines can be gotten very cheap as most people want the go fast 4AGE to bolt in to replace these engines any one got anything to say for or against this idea

Correct - or mount the motor unacceptably far forward IMHO.
It's a shame - 4AFE's are everywhere. The difficulty in finding a RWD 4 speed automatic adds to the hassle - Gearing a 3 speed auto in a sierra is a challenge unless you run large tyres.
Steve.

There is a right angle Distributor drive for Mk1 GTi engines. I'm not aware of the same item for a 4AFE.
I was looking at a 4AGZE recently, and they have the Distributor mounted in the front left hand side of the head - a much better solution for a sierra.

Yep, runs off the exhaust cam.Gwagensteve wrote: I was looking at a 4AGZE recently, and they have the Distributor mounted in the front left hand side of the head - a much better solution for a sierra.
While we're sort of on the topic, anyone know if a 4age dizzy is the same as a 4agze one? I can't see why there'd be a difference but you never know.

There are a number of ge gze dizzy combo's,which 1 do you have ??
are you running an aftermarket ecu ?, if so reusing your current dizzy will be the easiest option.
here's what i can remember
1) factory rwd & bigport 86kw ge (TVIS on the inlet manifold) dizzy has 2 pickups 1 i think the inner has a 24 or 36 tooth reluctor, the outer has a 4 tooth reluctor.
2) smallport ge also known as 100kw ge has dizzy with the same inner reluctor, the outer has a single tooth.
several different cap & rotor combo's (a whole other can of worms).
3) early gze also bigport or AFM (air fow meter) has a dizzy , I do not know which one off the top of my head but would be very surprised if it was different again to either of the above.
4) later gze known as map sensor gze smallport have cas(crank angle sensor) with no dizzy cap just a blank off plate, fits in the same location the internals are the same as the smallport ge.
5)20v are on the back of the head & probably the same pickup setup as the smallport there are at least 3 different 20v engines so i can't confirm

The one in red is the engine I have. I bought it without a dizzy and was just hoping to be able to use one from a 4age as gze dizzy's are thin on the ground. It looks identical to my old bigport 16v 4age but yeah.Drew wrote:There are a number of ge gze dizzy combo's,which 1 do you have ??

I've already bought like 3 starters trying to find one that fits and didn't want to go through the same shit for the dizzy.
Thanks for replying btw Drew.

To get around this in a mates 4age 20v conversion we fabbed up a rotor button mount to bolt to the front of the cam gear, then another mount for the dizzy cap. Still using the original dizzy shaft to run the cas. 15 plus days later at various tracks and no dramasGwagensteve wrote:There is a right angle Distributor drive for Mk1 GTi engines. I lost them on my old phone. Couple of company's in the states do kits for this but the quality is very sub standard!!!
I'm not sure with the fe but on the fwd ge the water flow and thermostats are a pain unless you like remote thermostats and your intake getting hot water... electric water pump and some Welsh plug relocating fixed this.
