gq diff and axle q's

Post by derangedrover »

Is the h233b carrier identical front and rear in GQ patrols other than the rear being 33 spline and the front 31? ie will a rear carrier go into a front 3rd member? (carrier = part ring gear mounts to, 3rd member = removable centre section)

Is there any GQ front inner axles that dont have a reduced diameter after the inner splines? If so what years etc.

LSD's in front diff, who has them, what conditions is it a benefit/hindrance. If you were on a budget, would an LSD be better in most situations than an open diff, or on balance a pain in the arse?

Cheers

Hi!

I have in my GQ the rear diff of H233, becouse I need the 5.1 ring and pinion. You have to install it upside down and thtas it. Is a bolt one job.
If you want to put this dif, you have to swap it COMPLETE as a third member. You can change the satelites inside with the front dif with the ones you have it in the current axle.
Due to the fact that the rear case is bigger then the front one and is not anymore a high pinion, you will have to change the steering arm that connect the two front wheels with the "high steer in a GQ" (look about this subject in the search section, its very interesting and usefull) and to pass the conecting rod in front of the axle.
LSD in front: I would not do it...You can't steer as easy on the snow so you will have to drive in 2X4 all the winter...Much better an ARB Dif. And the traction that an LSD give is quite nothing. At least thats my opinion.

Seen similar in rear of SWB to give High pinion and less tailshaft angle.

OK, but that doesn't really answer my question.
I want to keep the hp front third member but use a rear gear carrier in it.

Anyone?

use a navara rear. it is already 31 spline, you just need to drill the crown wheel bolts out to 12mm.
you will more than likely also have to shave a couple mm off the ends of the inner axles too, as it will have a thrust block in the hemisphere..

Ok.

But what if I wanted to go to 33 spline front axles?

If Im going to get front axles made out of hytuff (for another reason) I may aswell go to 33 spline fronts while im at it for very little extra $. Then if I have the outer end made 30 spline I could run 30 spl cromo longs and have a pretty tough front diff. :?:

SO, will the rear hemi fit in the front casing?

Bazzle,

Do you know the inner and outer hemi bearing numbers for both the front and rear diffs in a GQ?

Well, no, the rear diff will not fit into the front carrier (case). The 33 splines are bigger in diameter then the 31 front shafts. I would say that even if you will manufacture a 33 spline front shaft, the distance where the bearings will be situated into the front case will not be centered...
Why you don't put the rear diff, including the case, but with the 31 spline spider gears?!

hhmmmm.. i think the rear bearings have a bigger inside and outside diameter, meaning the journals(?) for them are also bigger... i have a couple of hemispheres with bearings on them laying around the backyard, i'll check this out..
