Double telescoping shocks

Post by Rainbow Warrior »

Just thought a crazy idea to increase shock travel without length, how about joining 2 shocks together side by side, you had nearly the 1 shock length compressed but 2 shocks length extended?
Would require one of the shocks to be upside down, anybody tried it?

You could in effect get heaps of downward travel using standard height towers and even lock one set off somehow for road use or side angles.

Sort of, though that would mean you'd be having one set compressing while the othe extends, could be really weird to drive on the road, I was thinking of basically clamping 2 shocks in the 69 position so they both extended or compressed together or a Z shaped bracket joining the bottom of one to the top of the otherwhile keeping them side by side.

How well do the shocks last with the side loads and also using the body to carry these loads?

Not sure, but even if you halved their life to double your travel many wouldn't care, you could probably get 2 standard travel shocks for the price of a super long travel version, then there's the modifications to fit them too, but you may have to move the mount to improve their centreing anyway, that's perhaps the reason for using 2 vs 1 in the pics above.

For a BUGGY or a specialty off roader it would proberbly be a BUZ to play with, but to pass an EVIL engineers Cert. in this country I would not even consider it bacause of the BOTTOMING goings on....
