Warning Lights and Radio trouble.

Post by Chookman »

Have TD42 in a GQ and on startup the battery and the fuel filter light (water switch) come on for about 5-10 seconds and then fade out usually in time with the glow plug circuit turning off. Both then remain on very faintly while the engine is running.
After the car has warmed up for the day (doesn't happen when cold) the radio has a loud engine/ignition noise coming through on the speakers.
WTF its a diesel.
Noise also gets louder with more revs.
The noise is only effecting FM radio. AM and CD are ok.
Dash voltage indicator occasionally jumps between 12 & 14 volts.
Have disconnected everything at this stage with no change.
Am about to slip the Alternator belt off to see if that changes the problem.

Can anyone make a suggestion??
Am thinking maybe alternator

Thanks for any help

mate, mine was doing the same thing, and was doing so for about 6 months, could not find the problem,

i replaced both battries, and the problem stopped imediatly,

i tried cleaning battry terminals and all,

one thing i did notice while it was doing it, was my voltage indicator (mine is digital on after market guage) was at 11.4 volts once started for about 10 second, when the voltage picked up, the lights went out,
it only happened on first start up of the day,

all in all, your battry might be on its way out

MIGHT being the key word

thats a shitter then, id head back towards your alternator then, maybe popin to an auto sparky, and ask him to have a quick squizz, get him to check all the outputs if you dont have the ability to do so,

It more than likely will be Alternator related, as these lamps are connected to the Alternator charge warning lamp via a diode behind the instrument cluster. It can be--Brushes worn out/saturated with engine oil (leaking oil seal) exciter diodes, regulator, output diodes

Thanks Woop,

have also just noticed a 2.2uf capacitor wired from +ve terminal of alternator to earth. Doesn't appear in my workshop manual electrical diagrams but am guessing its for noise supression.
Doesn't appear to be an after-market add on as it carries the Nissan logo.
Perhaps the capacitor is breaking down under load.
Other than that I'm tippin the Alternator will be coming apart.

Just having a guess as am hoping for a cheap and easy fix.
What do you think?????

I had the battery light, handbrake light :? and air filter light turn on and off intermittently a little while back.

Initially i thought it was battery related or maybe wiring.

In the end I rebuilt the alternator and the lights disappeared

Check your alternator ;)

Hi Guys,

Ended up being my alternator.
Everything pretty much just packed it in all at once. Unfortunately I was a couple of hours from home when I lost all charging capacity.
Lucky I've got a diesel and two batteries. The only thing I had to run was my fuel cu-off solenoid.
Ended up getting an after market replacement (vacuum pump included)
for not much more than what I was quoted for a rebuild (no pump).

Thanks for all the help
