Fitting H motor into a Bj42 is it straight swap?

Post by ozlegacy »

Hi guys my 3B is looking bit longth in tooth, I think its done a head gasket and its burning shit load of oil etc.

I'm looking at either getting another 3B to build up and swap in or I have option to get a H motor (6cyl diesel from a HJ45) for a reasonable price. To me the HJ45 looks identical from firewall foward to my BJ42 am I right in assuming it will fit in no worries? Also will it mate to my 4 speed or do I need to use the 4 speed it comes with?

I've noticed power and torque wise the H is almost identical to the 3B so not expecting any power increase etc. and would rebuild the H with new rings possibly pistons etc.

Basically I want a reliable engine for minimum cost and would like to stay diesel, would love 14bt etc. but not mad on spending big bucks

there old engines not bad but no 1hz,

i think your engine mounts should line up (or it'd be easy to get H mounts)

your gearbox has a longer input shaft (or was it shorter) than that behind the 6, so get a 6 cylinder (any not just diesel) transmission, or rebuild yours with the 6 cyl input shaft

In terms of specs on paper its no worse than the 3B which I find adequate, Id luv a 2H etc. but they get expensive quickly

agreed, the H is not a huge performer, probably a little more peaky than a 3b. but they are reliable, and alegedly 2H's had a habit of splitting heads

the H seems to sacrifice the head gasket before that happens (according to everyone i spoke to when i thought i'd done my head)

if your just looking for something to keep the truck running, radiator piping might be different, i think that the airbox is on the opposite side to the engine in a 3b (from what i saw at a wreckers). if it was a straight gearbox/ motor swap, should all be pretty easy

Add extractors and a free flowing exhaust and a tickle of the pump/timing and you haeva sweet coal burner.

I loved my H - I kept up with others and the only drawback was changing that f$#@n oil filter. those O rings are serious PITA :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger:

the way i was looking at it .... if the H motor needs a rebuild then wouldnt you be better rebuilding your 3B and then the money you would have had to spend on actually fitting the H motor could go towards "performance mods" for the 3B :?:

i am not really familiar with the 3B but i would assume you would need different radiator , wiring , exhaust and the location of the engine mounts would be different
i do have to admit my old H motor took a beating it handled everything except the 35s
it had enough torque to break 2 transfer cases

Yes, I've got extractors on my H motor and it's cool. As for the oil filters, I bought an adaptor from Queensland Cruisers here in Rocky that allows me to
fit Z175 fliter on......so no more bloody o rings.

YES!!! Wish I did the day I dropped 9L of black oil all over my driveway!!

Dam O rings!

The H is a top engine - but has a 300rpm lower redline than the 3B.

Hi - not wanting to Hi-jack the thread or anything, i have a 3B diesel for sale - runs fine, has 345 on the clock, ask 85lux how it goes, $600 . I can remove from car and put on crate for you if you want it.

Cheers - Rob

I remember the first oil change I did on a H motor.....wasted that bloody much oil it wasn't funny :bad-words: This time round it was pretty simple, only prob is that you need a big enough filter wrench for the Z 175 filter because it's a wide bugger. :)

Main reason I want another engine is Id rather build up the replacement engine (if it needs it) then do straight swap, if it take out 3b and work on it its out of action for longer and the crusier will soon be main mode of transport.

Stackson have pmed u re ur 3b

a second 3B would be the way to go ...rebuild it while still driving on old 3B then after you swap them you could sell you original motor to partially cover rebuild cost

BJonroids, aka Rob, did a 2h swap. he rekons if he had to do it all over again, he'd get pretty much the whole front cut as you'd need a lot more than just the engine...ie radiator,hoses...etc.

my 2c.
:)

yer more i look into it more another 3B makes sense.

This is going a bit off topic but if I planned on turboing the 3B later is it worth rebuilding the 3B with forged pistons etc. (no idea if such thing exists for diesels just going on car experience)

Or is a good rebuilt 3B adequate for turboing with stock internals?

Not sure about 3B stength but while your looking into turbos look for superchargers as well....... a lot of jap import superchargers getting around now .... simple belt driven no major exhaust mods

Hmm ok thanks for advice, I have a pretty good knowledge of turbos etc from wrx days hence my leaning towards them as I know how to make them work (on petrols anyway)

But I like idea of not having to muck around with manifolds etc with supercharger idea
