Supra-Lux Clutch Questions
Hi Guys,
As some of you know, I am still attempting to supra-ise my hilux by putting a 7M-GE into it.
24V DOHC EFI 140Kw 3.0L Straight 6......mmmmmm....power.
Luckily I have been able to source both a W58 Bellhousing AND 2 x 5M-GE engine mounts, its time for me to go pick up the motor (7M-GE) out of my mates Cressida.
I was just wanting to know, how heavy are the 7M-GE motors with auto g/box attatched to it??
Would a hoist with a S.W.L of 420Kgs be enough to lift the motor onto my ute tray??
What's another motor that would be similar in weight? a guesstimate would be fine.
Any help here would be most appreciated, as I am moving it tonight or tommorrow.
Cheers,
Bart

Yeh, easy done. that combo would be lucky to weigh more than 200kgs.
Are you putting the GE or GTE in?
\m/
Hey guys,
Got the motor into the garage, sold the auto g/box to make back
some cash, and I bought an engine stand for it too.
Alright supra-lux gurus,
I just need to know, what is the best thing to do next??
Basically I have the following so far:-
1 x 7M-GE motor in working order.
1 x W56 -> 7M bellhousing
2 x 5M-GE (single hole in middle) engine mounts.
1 x 7M-GE Cressida AUTO wiring loom (does this matter?)
1 x 7M-GE MANUAL ECU (Was told I needed this)
I'm looking around for a clutch kit now.
Do I need a new flywheel off a manual? and can I use my hilux clutch
or part thereof? I have to look back through my PMs and emails and
stuff again to refresh.
Also, what is the best way to put her in?
Do I remove box, transfer and all, bolt it up, and swing it back in?
or do I remove the 22R, and then put the 7M onto the box?
Sorry if this is a stoopid question...
Also, how hard is it to remove a 22R from an 89 single cab?
Cheers,
Bart

I think you would have found the engine would have been fine with the auto ecu, but you have a better one now so thats cool. Im quite sure you can use the 5mge flywheel on the 7mge. Go to www.toymods.org.au and search for 5mge to 7mge swaps cause this is quite popular with supras and earlier cressidas.
Best way to do it is to leave the tc and box in, rip the engine out and put the 7m in, i dont know what sort of engine mount mods you will have to do. Removing the 22r should only take about 2 hours, so its easy.

Thanks Skip,
From what I've been told, the 5M-GE mount can be used on the 7M-GE
with the 22R chassis mounts?? Lets hope so.
Will check toymods now for info on the flywheel, etc.
Had to buy a new ECU as the original was hacked up for pieces for the conversion in my mates car. But I got it cheap so its ok.
What do I need to do with the Auto Loom? or will it run with the manual
ECU OK?
Cheers,
Bart

Well if this is true you are pretty bloody lucky. Why dont you do a few measurements now to check this?
Get on toymods about that loom and ECU question too. If you can't find anything searching put a topic up and you will certainly get an answer. Can you check if it will plug in?

I'll have to check the connections when the ECU arrives in the post...whenever it comes.
I'll post up a topic on toymods and see what they can tell me,
I was hoping someone off the board would have had overcome this issue already
It's just that the boys on toymods arn't really into 4WDs. They should be able to tell
me a some good info though.

Been doing some research on Toymods,
It turns out that all 5M, 7M and 1Js use the same spigot bearing so that is OK,
Toyota Part Number : 90363-12002
Or aftermarket Koyo version: 62012RSC3 - FG GSR 00012
But it turns out there were 2 different flywheels on the 5M-GE's
both have same OD, but one has a 240mm friction surface, and one has 225mm.
All manual 7M-GE's came with the 240mm wheel which is the one I will hopefully get. Is this what is usually used??
I wanted to use the 7M-GTE pressure plate, but I've been told it's harder to do?
Can anyone help out here? And do I really need the extra clamp of a 7MGTE pressure plate? Or will the 7M-GE flywheel clutch and pressure plate be OK?
Also, I think I've found someone who can wire it all up for me for a good price too. So once I get this flywheel and clutch business sorted. I can start putting it all together!!!
Cheers,
Bart

i have the 5mge in my lux with the smaller of the three plates and just recently going up a sand dune it gave way and blew a lot of smoke.now it doesnt grip nearly aswell between gear shifts on the road. i am going to upgrade to the heavy duty 7mgte unit. you may aswell get a new clutch kit before installing as then you wont have any problems with it in the future.make sure the flywheel is surfaced too. or do it the cheapo dodgy way like i did and end up in the same situation as me. my 2cents anyway.
I have been told that the 7M-GTE flywheel is different again from the 240mm one. Also, that the pressure plate is unique to this flywheel and not interchangeable with a standard 7M-GE (240mm) or 5M-GE flywheel (225mm)??
So how do you get around this? Do you just buy a 7M-GTE flywheel, and pressure plate and clutch and fit it all to the 7M-GE (or 5M-GE in your case)?
Also a cressida guru from toymods recons the 7M-GTE uses a "pull type" clutch, whereas the 7M-GE uses a "push type" clutch, will this be an issue for the conversion??? Do you think a brass-button would be an option or too hard to operate off-road??
Cheers,
Bart

I think you will be fine with a heavy duty 7MGE type clutch, full face organic sprung centre type. I believe this cause your hilux probably weighs slightly less than a MA70 Supra or MX80? Cressida and your power output is still standard. Just make sure you buy a brand new clutch for it!!!!!
Brass button is not an option for offroad, especially slow crawling. I have a 8 puck ceramic sprung centre in my car and it's not really that slippable. To slip you must give it a shitload of revs.

Skip,
I'm just asking cause I have found a guy who is selling a NEW 7M-GTE pressure plate, NEW flywheel, NEW brass button clutch, and spigot bearing for $500, do you think I should get this? I could maybe swap the
brass button for a heavy duty clutch at a shop or something.
Do you know if I can actually use the 7M-GTE pressure plate and flywheel with this conversion??
Regards,
Bart

Don't worry,
I have 2 simultanious threads going, one on here and one on toymods.
I have picked up some awesome information off them too.
Killalux was telling me that the 7M-GTE flywheel will fit on the 7M-GE, but
it will not fit in the W58 bellhousing as all turbo 7Ms used R-series boxes,
which makes good sense. Plus the toymods guys say that the biggest possible clutch face you could physically fit on the flywheel would be 240mm, otherwise it would foul on the starter motor.
So I will probably go with the 7M flywheel and pressure plate, with a heavy duty clutch.
As previously stated, I am running standard power and less weight than standard so should hopefully be fine.
I am also thinking about extending wiring loom and ECU into roof console?? Anyone tried this? Is it worth doing??
Cheers,
Bart
