5L - 2L Diesel engines

Post by Clown Boy »

Hi guys,

I am sure I have heard somewhere before that the 2L (2.4l diesel) and 5L (3l diesel) engines use the exact same 'extras'.

That is, I may need to change my engine sooner than I had hoped. So instead of the big upgrade I was saving for, I mightn eed to do it sooner.

If I swap my 2l-TE with a 5l engine will I be able to bolt on the same turbo, air con, power steer and altenator\vac pump?

Also will the loom or computer need to be replaced?

From what ive herd the 5L will bolt up and the turbo etc will be a bolt on deal .
As for the computer depends if you have 2lte if you have get a manula fuel pump and bypass the ecu if you have the throttle body from 2lt 2 then will be even easier but there are more experiencd people who no more than me .

You will be able to bolt the turbo up to your 5l, but it will be too small for a 3 litre diesel.

So the turbo will be too small? Bugger. Would this limit what the turbo could do or renderi t useless or what?

The turbo's "effieciency field" wont match the 3 litre's. Basically it will just max out way too early. It will limit your top end performance, down low will be ok though.

Well I have seen Turbo's go on forums like this for a pretty penny so I should be able to sell mine and buy a bigger one.

like heaps of people I think you are confusing the 3L (2.8) and 3 litre (5L)
3L will take most of the gear from 2L and pretty much bolt in its place. 5L a totally different motor

Are you sure?

I hadt he comments here confirmed by a guy very familiar with SURFs who works at (or owns?) a wreckers on South Brisbane.

For clarification - I am talking about changing my 2L (2.4l Turbo Diesel) for a 5L (3.0l Turbo Diesel)

I wanted to wait until I could get a front cut for a 1KZ or something but due to the engine being at death's door - that is all up to chance and how long the engine lasts.

The 5 L is from the same family as the 2lte etc and have the same block and manifolds go take a look under a 5l and see for yourself or goto a wrecker and look you will find it is the same.
We are not talking the 1kzt here it is a total diff motor .
