Suspension Tech

Post by Rainbow Warrior »

I need to know Pythagoras Theorem, forgotten it.

I just fitted 3" lifted coils & EFS shocks want to work out the actual travel on my rear shocks, because they work at an angle.
My dual cab is pretty light in the arse so sits up a bit at the tail even with 3 " SWB coils
I calculated the springs compression by multiplying the number of coils by their diameter, realisticaly they even if the bump stops and shocks allowed it would never get that compressed I imagine.
Interesting was the fact that the factory rear coils only measured 15.5mm diameter with 7 coils, compared to some heavy duty 1" raised 20mm coils could actually have 50mm more compression and be more likely to acheive it.

The shocks measure 390 compressed 670 extended.
The springs measure 144 compressed and 510 extended.
The bumpstops measure 180mm at rest

My rear shock travel is 280mm, but they sit at 600mm out of 670mm giving me less than 70mm of downward travel in the shocks and should sit down another 70mm to reach halfway, the springs only have 130mm left but I could possibly use this if I extended the eye type shock mounts somehow by say 40mm.

My front looks pretty good sitting about halfway position

The shocks measure 365 compressed 600 extended.
The springs measure 128 compressed and 450 extended.
The bumpstops measure 120mm at rest

The shocks travel 235, and sit at 490mm, which is only 8mm higher than halfway. I have only 30mm of extra spring travel left but effectively the bumpstops are hitting only 20mm before the shocks, so no point playing with it.

I think I'd better throw all the camping gear in and remeasure.

Thanks, they never mentioned a school it could be used for 4x4 suspension calculations.

If they had of mentioned that at school I might have learnt something...

Is it a good idea or not to take the small clamps off the leaf spring packs?

Actually, I have done it already but wanna know any side affects, they are making a loud clicking noise now, but what is it...?

Its probaly just the leaves clicking back into place between the clamps....its a better idea to just straighten them vericly then they will still keep the leaves straight
