I have an old cruiser 1985 75 series.
I was going to weld the gears in the front diff to make them permently locked.
I figured if I only lock the hubs when off road this would be a more economical way to get a locker other then pay the big dollars for the airlockers.
Has anyone done this to there own diff?

Welding the front diff on a vehicle as heavy as a yota is not a good idea unless you own a CV/axle supply business. and as Bazzle said it will degrade your manouverability so much that it will be unsafe.

BUT if you mainly go mud boggin and only lock the hubs when you need it then CVs might survive longer
you could just lock one hub until you need full traction but the axle that is locked will be under a lot of load
if you drive mainly on rocks you will have steering issues (your vehicle will try to drive straight instead of turning) and you wont be abled to simply unlock one hub for better steering then lock it back in for traction ... your hub will stay locked in until the load is released by wheelspin.
