I have the 33" MTRS
ARB lockers front and rear

Would the winch be the next on the list?

I really want a highmount, as from my research, for competition work it can not be beat. Whats your opinion?

Low Mount
Price vs availability

Mounting it and the fab work is taken care of so dont factor that in.

could get an older one and rebuild it with a newer motor

unless you are planning on doing winch challenge type sh1t, just put a low mount on there, you only want to use it as a last resort, so why add 5% of the weight of your truck 500mm in front of the front axle.. Hilux's are pretty light, a low mount will drag them up some big stuff. High mounts are big, heavy objects. They are good but..

Forgive me if I am wrong but adding weigth over or in front of the front wheels in not really going to hurt things when 4 wheeling.

If anything it will help keep the front down on steep climbs and ledges.

Old highmounts can be had for under $700, and can then be rebuilt with new motor and plasma or whatever you like...

Now reverse that situation, steep downhill with all the weight shifting to a point in front of the front axle and no weight at the rear.... The truck in question is bobbed, so there is even less weight at the back than a normal hilux....

Well, I do want to do comps. And I know that as I slowly build the truck up, the comps will get harder etc.

I just dont want to buy a low mount and within a year kickmyself, as I will want a highmount.

Rather spend the money once and get the right thing. In some of the old mags, the comp cars had a mixture of high and low mounts, but these days its all highmounts, cept for zooks and some jeeps.

I have a Old Warn high mount and i love it!

Yes it is a bit heavier but the difference between a high and low mount would be bugger all in the overall view of things!

it also carries slightly more cable than a low mount which is also a good thing!

I've set my eyes on the M8274-50 for the front of my Disco with Plasma and Alum. fairlead...and the Ramswey RE10,000 (worm & gear) for the rear of that same truck.

Now, I got a NICE, GREAT, CHEAP offer from the Ramsey source...Should I run that same winch up front? I'll be heading for RFC in December hopefully, so I need the speed. But that torquy RE at 10,000 does look tempting...

Any ideas?
Money aside, which is the best inch for the front? (electrical)

Yup, good point Nick!

You will get more out of your rig by putting longs in, especially if you want to run comps.

$1200.00 for longs and $500.00 should land you a half decent winch!

I paid $150.00 for mine, its about 20 years old and would do a lot harder pulls than most others. (you don't even need wheels on the ground :lol: )

Keep your eyes and ears open as they do pop up from time to time!

Mine is a high mount $150.00

RUFF has a High mount, i think he paid about $300.00

So they are about for the right price!

I have a high mount that i paid $300 for but i havent fitted it yet.
Currently i have been running a low mount XD9000i it has been modified by way of fitting the earlier motor that was re-wound by a local company that has done a lot of comp winch re-winds and is putting out approx 5hp,

It works fantastic in every situation i have been in so far and i have given it some pretty hard work outs. Like winching for aprox 100mtrs up a hill you cant walk up its that steap and i only had rear wheel drive. It pulled constantly with no sound of loading up or slowing down and i gave it no time to cool between moving from tree to tree.

When it had the original motor fitted i got maybe 5 hard winches out of it and it burnt out. The new style motors have plastic brush holders and are prone to failure.

The only reason i am planing on going to the high mount is for the extra cable length and this is mainly for social wheeling not comps.

Also there is no off the shelf bar available for a hilux to suit a high mount.

No idea Ruff, this aint my sole hobby, but I LOVE competition of any kind and want to build my lux up to make it ready for comps.

When I actually get a real job, these money issues wont be AS bad.

I just ant to drive it. I love the rock crawling thing more than the winch challanges. I like the short course events, woodpecker.

That enough info?

Ed, you don't need a high mount unless your racing against the clock.
You have to plan what you are going to use your truck for. Since I've had my 9000lb low mount I've used it once (crossed up in some big arsed ruts) in over 20 trips at Toolangi, Marysville etc.
Yes I'll be doing the odd navi event and the low mount will be fine for that.
Learn to drive it with the lockers first, winching should be a last resort and it will take some gnarly stuff to stop a twin locked, 33 MTR'd Lux.
The only reason I got the winch was to be self sufficient in navi style events otherwise on club/private trips a strap is generally all thats needed.

For short coarse and Rock Crawling style events i would go for a low mount as you rarely need to pull far and the weight you will save over the high mount will be well worth it.
For winch challenge events i think the high mount would be better suited as you have a lot of long hard pulls in a short period of time and weight is not as much a factor.
