How savage is a Lockrite/EZ locker in rear of zook?
With all the talk of these cheap lockers available from the US I am wondering about a rear locker for the missus zooki.
She drives it daly and Im wondering how bad they are on the road.
How are they on wet roads?
Gravel roads?
Extra tyre wear?

I got a detroit ez-locker, and i have no trouble with it on the road. It also depends on how you drive with it. Gettin on and off the throttle hard round a tight roundabout in the pouring rain could cause a issue, but you just have to learn to drive with it. In the gravel the locker doesnt realy cause a problem either. For the offroad performance i rekon they are worth the trade offs, but depends on what ya protitys are.

autolockers can be a bit of a bitch, but not too bad if ya get used to it. on and off the power around corners is harsh, and changing gears while heavy on the gas can snap the back end a few inches to one side (almost like having too much horsepower and snap shifting )
i think the only time i really hate it is when i'm having a crappy day and start getting frustrated with the thing not driving smoothly.... if i'm annoyed and i wanna gas it out of a carpark or whatever to release the frustration it gets worse cos it handles like a pig when u drive it like that, lol... the rest of the time it's all good
but.. some ppl can't adapt to it....

you most probably need to change your driving style, but these 'little' side effects on road dont do it justice for what it can do off road.
just drive like grandma, and it'll be right. its fun driving my vit. only last night i put the dunnydores to shame at the local 'public' drag strip/burnout pad. next time i will get pics for ya all. noones ever seen a lifted vit doing perfect donuts in ONE lane, let alone figure 8s. lovin it.
just get it, dont like it, take it out and sell it.
EDIT: ok sorry, just reread the topic post, its for the mrs' zook. well, if you know anyone with a lock right installed already, let her have a drive of that, and see what she says. i hear if its an auto, most of those 'side effects' dont occur too often. but i guess you just gotta be smooth with the clutch. i can never get a smooth shift from first to second in a 'drag' race. *sigh* hope this helps.

well i have lockers front and rear in my zook on 29s .
my experiance is
if you going to be on the loud peddal , make sure it is down lots or the shock of it locking and unlocking is enought to scare even driver.
watch your the passangers face as the locker unlocks or engages with a large click. or the car moves sideways under heavy acceleration. priceless
but generally drive it slower and just be aware of it, and drive accordingly is almost unoticable.
you will chew up wheel bearings on the rear a bit quicker as the shock goes out to the wheels and drive train.
your turning circle will be increased slightly.
in 4wd make sure you have arms like arny if you try and turn on the road. it just won't happen other wise. easier to unlock hubs or drop to 2wd.
but the biggest thing is the ablity to just go futher offroad. with them in i was able to go up slopes i never thought i could/ should. with out lockers sometimes i would need alot of runs to get up and over. with em in it just keep front where you want and loud peddle in moderation.
best idea is find some one local with a locked zook and see if you can get a ride.

why are you getting a locker just because they are cheap or because you wife will need a locker for her daily driving. If the Zuk is only going to be a daily driver then i wouldn't bother.

Ok if you are expecting it but can be a handful until you get used to it. They are fairly predictable but sometimes will still catch you out.
Oviously better for an offroad vehicle but for a on road commuter then i wouldn't

If I could find some cheap 2nd hand ARB air lockers for the zook I would snap them up but funds dont alloy for new ARBs at the mo.

you guys are all talking as if an open diff cant burn it up! =P
on most corners with the vit 8v in mine i can get both rears spinning quite well - granted it takes effort compared to a locker, but it works!
as for locker in the front - personally i wouldnt get anything but an air locker in there... purely cos if it should happen to lock with wheels turned you lose steering - which would really suck with lots of trees around / in traffic on wet road. Probably better to save the $$$, wait a few more months and get the air locker. Do it right the first time and have no regrets!
another advantage is a hill you may find easy with the locker on, may open up a whole new world of challenges just so you can say you got up there without it locked! =)

What does power or effort have to do with spinning them both? Open diffs in good working order will only spin one wheel. You might get it sliding across both but only one will light up.
