Just wanting to hear from anyone with a high suspension lift runing a double cardin joint.

How many k's are you getting out of one of these.

I have a 6inch lift and one on the front shaft. Got the whole shaft built new and have only done about 3000k's over 6 months and it's stuffed.

Cheezy gets mega flex from his front end so I guess that is why he runs a double cardinal joint? Standard rigs with 6 inch springs and shocks do not need them.

Getting back to the point they should last a lot longer than what yours has.

i run them front and back on my TJ without any problems, with 7" of lift.

I have GQ shorty with 7" of spring lift with a DC in the rear.
I was told when I got it done that I needed to grease the DC joint every 1000km's and after every off-road session (DC joint has 3 grease nipples). I have been doing this since November (about 5000km's I think) and is still going strong.
My front drive shaft starts to vibrate in 4H at about 60m/h so I would also like to see if a DC in the front would fix this.

Shouldn't you pump grease into any uni joint to make it last? Why should a double cardin joint be any more prone to failure compared to a single cardin joint?

Maintenance is the key to anything lasting along time.........

A double cardin joint is not just 2 uni's.
It is 2 unis with a centre cv style joint between them.

I do all 3 nipples. I am having trouble rememebering which bits of the DC they are attached to but they are all kind of 'inside' and hard to get to.
I'll have a look tonight...

I always thought you had to be carefull about over greasing unis.
The 1st and 3rd nipples are normal uni joint nipples I think and the middle one.. I'm not sure how that works.

Have the mob that done my shaft checking it out as we speak.

Will try get more info on what they think.

Well I don't know what I can offer but I run a D/C in the front (cause that's what it came with. The original one opened up after 6 months or so, but I kept driving it for another 8 months or so. Just got noisier and noisier, but could be quietened by packing it with grease (the nipple was actually impossible to completely cover with my grease gun because of lack of room, so packing it was difficult and probably incomplete).

After lifting the leaves 2" and getting sick of the clatter (particularly on the beach) and knowing that I wasn't getting smooth power delivery to the front, I replaced it. About $110 for a complete new shaft I think. Same design and seems to be working fine, but its only been a month or two. The uni on the other end is actually at a reasonable (not extreme, but still quite large) angle cause I haven't rotated the pinion so the D/C and uni share the angles round about evenly. I get no vibs from the front (in fact, now that I can't hear it clacking away I've accidentally left a front hub locked for days!).

I run one in the front of my 80 which is still full time 4wd has been in now for bout 6months only done bout 2000k's but still runs fine and was 2nd hand when i put it in..

i run a double carden in the rear of my zuk done bout 15000 k with it
still as good as i put it in

and i didnt touch it before i put it in. came out the front of a hilux so id say its done quite a few ks

As far I know you cant overgrease a uni, old stuff and water etc comes out past seal and new stays around rollers.

For the hard to reach nipple on Carden (and uni's) you can get an end for grease gun that has more of a point on it.

Well MQs come standard with a front double cardin in the petrol motor series.......

and i pick em up at 250 000 kms plus........ and its not the double cardin thats got the problem, uts usually the slide joint on the shaft that has a flogged out seal or something similar so it rattles...........

When u say how long they are lasting...... Its very dependant on how often u use it in 4WD.

If u have only done 3000kms in total and the front DC has gone, which means u may have done a coupla hundred ks offroad..... You have a massive problem. Maybe broken gearbox mount or ur front diff pinion needs rotating... these can cause them to wear much quicker....

If u have one in the front and u use the car for 4wding once a week and grease it before and after every time, it SHOULD last a coupla hundred thousand k's.

IF it was a rear we are talking about and being used constantly, in something like a cruiser or patrol id say u should get a good 20,000 kms at the very least out of the thing as long as its maintained.

Pick up the shaft today.
They have replaced a uni in it free of charge.
Will see how this goes.
Also
The car is a landcruiser 80 series full time FWD and the cardin is on the front. The car is only used off road so the only driving on road is to get off road.

The pinion angle is pointed up and at the tx case. I have castor correction plates so I did not think it was that bad.

like i said, i run 2, one in the front and one in the back, they have been going strong now for over 2 years.

Havn't put it back on yet but the guy said I should be greasing it after every beach run as well as every 5000k's.

I have been to fraser, for over a week, 3 times in the past 8 months and a few other day trips up the beach so maybe this has contributed to premature ware
