just doing a power steer conversion on my 40, as I am fabbing a bracket from scratch and using a holden pump I want to know if i can run the pump with out fluid to check alignment of fan belt etc.

not if you want it to last
just run the hose in a loop back to the pump for testing purposes

I take it that you have a vee belt drive.

If you can't check the alignmet with it stationary, I dont see how running it will help.

The fluid is used to lubricate the pump, so running without is going to cause some damage.
