jumps out of low 4

I have an 85 cruiser swb 3f motor 5speed that keeps spitting out low 4. does any one have any ideas of what could be causing this and how do i fix it??? im in the bris area.

i had this problem and replacing the broken engine mount worked

ok might be a simple fix

when your in low 4 try and push the shifter forward and see if thats what is causing the drama... mine does it all the time

the detent plate gets worn/bent out of shape and allows it to switch into 2wd low

strange cause the body lift in mine doesn't come near the opening in any selection

and its got 2 inch blocks in it

no it doesn't have a body lift , nor are the engine mounts broken even the detent plate is in perfect nick. guess i'll have to put it in to get fixed. thanks for the help tho.

no it doesn't its all on the floor with levers. its a fj75 swb

It could be the detent spring in the transfer. There is a spring loaded ball that keeps the high-low shift fork in position on top of the transfer, kept in place by a hex plug just to the left (passenger's side) of the high-low shift lever. Remove this plug and the spring, the ball will likely stay in the hole (unless it is stuck to the spring) Examine this spring to see if broken. Often it is just the plug that has come loose.

The plug is circled in green in the picture attached.
