80 series brakes on a lux.

80 series brakes on a lux.
I saw a thread of a rock buggy and 80 series rotors were fitted with ifs calipers to a lux front housing.
Thing is that it was mentioned like the swap was simple and no details were given at all.
Is this swap a bolt on or are mods needed to fit it??? Would I only be able to fit 16" rims if I done the swap?? 80's only run 16's dont they?

15`s fit on the front of an 80, its the rear calipers that hit.
80 seires rotors I don`t think would be any better then standard late model hilux rotors (the vented type), I could be wrong but I also think late model hilux and 80 series have twin spot calipors about the same size, but like I said I could be wrong here.

Thanks Dave, you have an 80 booster dont you? How hard was the lot to set up correctly??? I did read and try to sponge out of Dazz's thread but it wasn't exactly about setting up on a lux etc...

I have complete 80 braking system on my lux, but I'm running 80 diffs, not lux ones.
The 80 booster and MC bolts straight up, but you need to turn the booster upside down so the rod lines up with where it conects to brake pedal.
Check your MC is not from ABS model if buying from wreckers- you'll have wonderful sensations when testing it out like I did.
The front calipers are different to 89- 97 lux they are both 4 piston but 80's are larger pistons and wider. Don't know whether 80's bolt up to lux, but V6 4 runner's will I'm told, and they have the larger pistons as 80.
The front rotors on 80 (30mm) are much thicker than lux (20mm) and look much better vented, so I doubt the 80 calipers would fit on lux discs because they would be too thin.
From looking at that link you posted, it looks like they used 40 series vented discs, and the IFS calipers bolt up.
Below are some pics- first is lux setup, second is 80 setup, third is 80 MC and booster (it is quite a bit bigger than lux).
The 80 booster and MC bolts straight up, but you need to turn the booster upside down so the rod lines up with where it conects to brake pedal.

A good conversion for a Lux is the V6 4 Runner front calipers which have twin 45mm pistons. Lux's run twin 35mm pistons this is a direct bolt on mod. You can tell the difference between the two calipers the V6 4 Runner ones have fins on the outside the Lux ones are flat.
The only other thing you will have to upgrade is the Lux 23.8mm diameter MC to the 25.4mm diameter V6 4 Runner unit (direct bolt in) to get the full benefits as it just won't supply enough volume to the bigger pistons.
Late model Lux rotors are vented 302mm diameter and 20mm thick the Cruiser ones are the same size I think but thicker. The Cruiser front calipers are twin 45mm pistons anyway.
I know a Surf with these mods and it pulls up really, really well you won't have to do anymore than that to the front. Rear discs on the back then would be the go.

A few points boys...
The v6 runner or surf calliper has 4x45mm pistons thesame as 80 series. The runner/surf calliper bolts to where lux and 60/75 bolt.
This gives mad brakes, especially with 80 booster and master.
Late 75 series aswell as lux (1990+) have 4x35mm pistons, same disc as earlier lux and 60/75, so these callipers are good on older trucks...(which have 22mm and 35mm pistons)
You can leave the std booster and master with either of these callipers, and get away with it, but pedal goes half way down to apply....
Have fun keeping the front sperings arched after stopping with the big brakes....they work that well....

From memory I fitted the booster upside down to the firewall (it seemed a better fit) then used vac lines off some old lux prob early petrol I think one was nearby at the time.whiteknight wrote:

I can vouch for how well the 80 brakes stop the little lux, even with 35's on it pulls up on a dime.

This might be getting off track and a bit of a hijack, but if i was going to upgrade my brakes with larger callipers out of a four runner could i just use the callipers, discs, master cylinder and hubs as well to gain the extra braking and wheel track. Or would the discs have too much offest?
