Looking at turboing the trusty 2H in the near-ish future, i haven't done a search yet, so if anyone remembers a good thread on this i'll do one.
Just wondering what size turbo? specifically deisel turbos? some people reckon small car turbo will work, but maybe better power from one of a truck with same size motor? i know almost nothing about turbo sizing and blade pitch etc. so any info would be handy.
The engine has just under 300,000 on it, but runs well, no smoke, so should be able to handle it.... i hope....

A mate of mine has a mike vine set up on his early 75. It was on it when he got the truck but it hauls some serious arse. Massive amount of torque. It also sounds like a Kenworth! Rocknferoza of here will back me up on this fact.

It towed my bundy on a car trailer at 105 with out a worry in the world. It pushes 37s all day everyday and does long trips in this set up.

Well, i turboed my 60 a bit over a year ago with a DENCO kit. Since then, i have intercooled it with a large front mount intercooler.
All the intercooler plumbing is done in 3 inch mandrel bent stainless.
I am currently running 12.5psi of boost. It has a tonne of torque (just buggered my clutch), and runs really cool. And yes it has been fuelled up for the extra boost.
Todays addition saw a plumb back blow off valve installed to combat compressor surge. The front mount provides a rather large reservoir of air that needs to be vented when the throttle snaps shut. Works well.
As for the exact size of the turbo, i am not sure.

from memory the turbo is about

if you are going custom, any turbo from a 2.5 - 3.5 litre petrol engine will work. the 2H manifold doesn't lend itself easily to modification for turboing, it might be easier to go full custom.

I am intending on full custom manifold - mad out of steel plate and pipe WT 4mm or so.
The word i'm getting is that a small turbo (generally speaking) will spool up quicker than a big one, so less turbo lag - meaning a turbo that starts spooling efficiently at 3000 rpm won't do me much good with a red-line at 3500-4000rpm.
Anyone used petrol turbos? they are different, right? wouldn't a same size petrol to deisel turbo have different turbine/compressor blade pitch?

Hmmm....
depending on your fabricating skillz and how much your time is worth to you, it might be worth your while to get a header flange from an exhaust shop to build your manifold on, rather than cutting out out from scratch.
as for sizing your turbo, unless you employ the services of someone with the experience and skill to read compressor and turbine performance maps and pricisely match a combo to your engine, you're stuck with grabbing someting about-right from the wreckers. A small turbo will make good boost right off idle but could well be out of breath by 2000rpm - no good. like you say, something big could take until 3000rpm to come on song, and by then it's all over. Diesel turbochargers tend to have a slightly larger compressor for a given turbine size, partly because diesels use more air per revolution than their equivalent sized petrol counterparts, right up until the petrol is at WOT and then it's pretty close (still more air to the diesel but not much). however the petty will rev, usually well past 6000rpm, and your 2H will hit the wall at 3500, so overall the petrol engine of a given size needs a bigger puff. as a very general rule of thumb, a turbo off a petrol engine approximately 2/3 to 3/4 the capacity of your diesel engine will work ok on the diesel - it's not likely to be a perfect match, but it will give you a kick along in the right direction. If you pick up your turbo pretty cheap and have fabrication skills, the whole job can be done for a few hundred $$, instead of the $3k a shop wants.

A CT26 from a few Toyota cars could be the go. They come of the turbo Celica and MR2 - 3SGTE engine. Also on the MA70 Turbo Supra with the 7MGTE engine. The TD Cruisers use the same CT26 unit I believe, but speced different perhaps?
Anyway, whether these are a good choice or not, I don't really know, but they are dirt cheap to buy second hand. $250-$400 from many jap wreckers.
If my turbo, (a DTS kit) ever craps itself on my 2H, I'll probably just try and modify the turbo manifold to suit a Toyota unit.
