MQ versas GQ RADIATOR

Post by Screwy »

The 308 cooks up abit when driving it......
its near overheated a few times.......
With the Deisel MQ radiator

My mates got a GQ SWB with a 304 injected in it, and it very rarely overheats with standard GQ TB42 radiator.

Would a GQ TB42 radiator be better for this than the MQ one????

I dont think they hold any more water.......

just an interesting thought.

hey mate when i did my conversion the standard tb42 radiator could not keep the 8 cool if anything a td42 radiator
i am using at the moment a 60 series diesel radiator (cruiser) this works alot better also get a engine fan off a early model cruiser the ones with a fixed plastic fan blade and use a holden HQ shroud about $40 from holden this should do the trick ;)

adapted MQ plastic fan onto the holden motor so the fan bits sweet, the whole thing is cowled already.......

im just looking at a bigger radiator from somewhere rather than getting mine re corred up to 4 or 5.....

DO you overheat at all with the 60 series radiator?
was it hard to fit?

also, u running any thermos??

cheers

The radiator should be ok, the MQ radiator in my car works well, I only have 1 thermo fan on the front blowing straight through, i dont have any cowls or engine fan....This keeps the 350 under boiling, there is another thing you can try and that is advance the timming a little more. This should let it run a little cooler, don't let it ping though...

I would say you have some issues with the flow of water, or you have a thermostate opening to early, take it in to a repairer and ask for a flow test, that will tell you straight away if it has a prob. replace the thermostate with a lil hotter one, around 5deg hotter, this will allow more time in the radiator before opening and recirculating the water through the engine.

LPG runs hotter in cars, as there is no lubricating agents in it, and it also has a higher flash point, and that is why on duel fuel cars, petrol will ussually run better as it is origanally set up for petrol. if you turned the cards and set the engine up for straight gas, you will get a whole lot more horse power. gas works most effective with a 10 to 10.5 to 1 compression ratio, it will also like a faster ignition curve, but shouldn't exceed much more than 33deg advance. If you tryed to run your car on petrol with this set up, it would ping its head off....

Gas has a higher octane rating then normal unleaded and leaded for that matter, though it requires aprox 1/3 more gas to petrol to fire, hence the reson you would use more gas to petrol over roughly the same distance.

Hope this has helped.

Ive got the std diesel mq rad in mine, its got twin au thermos, i run ice ignition and initial advance is about 20 deg. On the highway it runs a little hot but has never boiled yet, i hosed the crap out of the rad from the back the other day and it made a heap of difference. 30 min trip on the highway at 110 and didn't go over 85 degrees, and thats running a four speed box,
The next step would be to pull the rad apart and clean out the cores.

You & I run the EXACT SAME SET UP...only I have 50cubes more & Chevs tend to run hotter than holdens......

Mine does NOT overheat even when towing a tandem with a another MQ POS on it ...... and at 110 kph !

sounds like an ignition setup fault....

all i can do is get it re tuned for LPG only...... again......

with the body lift out id say it will help.

Im thinking of getting twin AU thermos for mine also to get more power back outa the motor.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between a TB42 & TD42 is the hose positions, don't imagine it would be worth swapping one for the other.

The story is much the same for MQ/MK radiators in petrol/diesel and with aircon and with out it .............. or is it ;)

Its not untill you actually count the number of cores that the big differance can be seen....

Some have 36 cores in one panel while others have 48..... as for telling the diff ....... untill one "sees" the 2 radiators side by side you wouldnt pick it

The radiator which has the higher core count is generally fitted to rigs with aircon, but they have also been on rigs without aircon too, much to my supprise.
I have even had rigs with air and power etc that have the 36 core job fitted...... :?

Armed with that.....then you come across radiators with 40, 42 , 44, 46,
cores and start to scratch ya head.... WTF ?????
Then to fawk ya right up along comes a real "out there" unit...... and this one now lives in my MQ by the way... its a 53 cored radiator ..... this one came out of an 87 MK diesel without air :? I now have 2 of these oddball 53 cored radiators and its taken ten years to get the 2..... the second one comming out of an"Aniversary Model" MK which is a petrol with air setup ..... talk about rocking horse poop hey !!!
I guess Nissan just handed the contract out from one company to another for the supply of radiators for the manafacturing plant....and the only explanation I can "guess" is that each company had its own design/style...... Other than that I cant figure out why there IS a differance..... all the radiators I have seen / own are all "genuine factory" and not recored units.
Jeff was supprised when I showed him the differance and I even let him swap his 36 cored job for a 44 I think ..... cant recall the exact number but jeffricals can count it to remind me  It definately wasnt the 53 job anyway :finger:

But I also hear petrols needed more cores because they ran hotter, turbo diesel may be different I suppose.
